Factistics

Post by boxy » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:42 pm

A thread dedicated to urban facts and statistics presented as proving dubious facts, 'n' shite :D

Was discussing strange head hair growing habits todays, and it came up that alcohol can help male pattern baldness... "do you know a bald alchy?" :o

Any truth to the observation?

(Were also talking about random bald and grey spots in people's hair.)

Your observation scores 84.6 on the truthiness scale.

I was discussing this very subject with Frogen a few years back on PA. There definitely seems to be a correlation between boozehoundery and hirsuteness. I think booze lowers testosterone levels or summit and so you kinda drift towards the female end of the spectrum. And chicks hardly ever go bald.

That testosterone thing was one of the first things that came to mind, after mentally going through the t-totaller vs. boozey bud list. Of the alchies I know for sure have a problem, one has a full head of hair, but it's far from "thick", and 2 are thining on top (you know, retreating from the temple corners). It's hard to tell with the rest, where there are a few t-tottlers (or near to it) and a heap of drinkers, who don't seem to have a probelm enough to effect their work/social life in a big way.

I wouldn't call it either way, without reliable evidence.

Urbane Legend: If you dangle a piece of raw meat over Mantras post-op gash it starts gnashing and snapping like an old mangler washing machine with a pit-bull terrier stuck in it.

Eating the crust didn't make my hair curly :P

I'm under the impression baldness is hereditary, predominantly carried/passed on by the mother, and accept other factors could hasten or delay it.

I had a crush on a semi-bald uni teacher of mine... until he told me he attended Hill Song, at which point it was DEAL OFF!!

.... Just the vision of a well educated individual wearing a nice suit to a Hill Song concert bopping til the penny's dropped resulted in my declining his invitation to his church one evening.
Whilst it's not overly ethical for him to have considered it to begin with, (my being a student), I did consider it, and probably would have gone had it not been to a church.

It just wouldn't have worked out...

Have seen some evidence that baldness may be a disease of civilization, like diabetes, etc. Cut back on the carbs ....

Doesn't mention baldness, but may help explain why it happens ...

He only asked if I wanted to go to church with him, and some horrible Vietnamese restaurant afterwards.

Anyway, he had Elma Fudd Syndwome, ... "Mewwy, I am vewwy vewwy howney" Ok, I made that bit up...but he replaced his r's with w's.

Kinda sexy until he destroyed it with the concept of a good looking man speaking in some foreign tongue up at Hill Song..*wince*

My imaginary partner hated him, hated it when I would come home from my clinical placement (the place he worked when he wasn't teaching us at uni)... at 4 am in the morning with Vietnamese omelet strewn through my hair...

:D No.. on a serious note, we went to a Vietnamese restaurant/eatery thingy after a clinical placement during-the-day, but there were 3 of us, (3 female students) he was our clinical facilitator... (would hover around the wards observing us ,asking staff questions, marking us)... he flirted with me, said something complimentary, I swear to you, the crush lasted about 1 week...then after I found out about hillsong, I started cracking jokes about him.... ie, bald patch on his head was a solar panel for a sex-machine, that he was a wanker, so must have rubbed it all off the back of his head..ie pillow friction.... damn it, he looked like Nick Cage... even my mother described him as having spooky good looks.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of Vietnamese soup like broths, that smell rather like unhygienic female patients bed linen ... well, that's what I was thinking when he bought us lunch and I knew he wanted me to really really enjoy it.... so I ate it really really fast when he went to the gents.

8-) Dontchu hate it when you have to pretend you like something someone else has bought you.

pmsl ...He was a nice guy ..but a bit creepy. He would turn up and scare the hell out of us from nowhere, but, facilitators are supposed to do this I guess, just he took it very seriously.

My friend swears to this day she saw him drive past us slowly (I was too busy talking to someone as usual) when we were at an end of semester party, but she was a bit 'anxious'... no, he was a nice guy, just shy and straaange.
