And they wonder why good kids turn bad...
Global Software company's CEO : "Eeeer, yeah thanks kid for alerting us to half a mil's worth of software and codes to access it in the hands of hackers, but we don't really want the world knowing how our customers bank account details were also swiped from our company's servers at the same time which would compromise investor and consumer confidence in not only our company, but our Company's most important partners/suppliers also and bring our company to it's knees, so if it's ok, can we keep this between ourselves sport, we don't want this getting around oh, and if it's not too much trouble, could we count on you being a witness should we take this to court?"
What is the point of teaching your children to do the right thing ie, alert authorities and the company/victim when they say "Yeah, thanks sport, but now we have this mess to contend with so, cheers, and thanks again."
If I were this Companies CEO, I would have rewarded this kid for NOT having done the wrong thing, if for nothing else, but so if it ever happened again, I could count on them to help us, this oppose to just letting company insurance take care of it and kick back and wait for it to happen again some time soon.
Hands up all those who have trusted an online company ie, ebay, jagex etc, with their account information? (note, these are only examples), if so, had my son not been a good kid and alerted their companies partners CEO to this serious security breech, then not only could my son have sold this information to some very dangerous people and made himself a small fortune, but could have done bad things with this information himself, and at the very least, passed around online gaming software and access codes at the company's expense.
Moral to the story, being a good citizen doesn't pay.
FUCK THEM!!
Like it or not, they will express their gratitude this and honour a young lads good deed, with something more than a 2 minute Skype chat with the company's CEO.
What's wrong with this world, where are our values, remember the good old days when you rescued someone from a burning building this and were acknowledged, praised for having done so?
OK, we should not expect to be rewarded for doing a good deed, and if my son was 18 or 21, I wouldn't be so pissed off, it's just I had hoped this CEO would at least reinforced the fact that my son had done the right thing by something more than a skype chat , that's all, or am I just being parentally over demanding here?
It's tough raising moral kids in a corrupt world these days, this prick of a CEO was more concerned about other companies fining out than anything else.
What do you reckon guys, should I make an international phone call and blast this CEO myself, this and tell him how had it not been for my son being an honest young man, he may not have a job right now?
I am so pissed off!!
They have a head office in every state in Australia, even if they offered my son a field trip or company tour, some work experience, this would have been enough for me, enough to positively reinforce his good deed.
Again...
And they wonder why good kids turn bad!
I feel like clobbering this CEO over the head.
I bet he's not a parent himself, and if he is, I'll bet even his own kids cant recall the last time dad watched them play sport.
Fuck it, I'm going to call him....it's the principle of the thing.
Arrogant American faggot!

And don't even think about it Skip... don't say a word!
This is a thread for decent people only to discuss how CEO's take so much, yet give so little back to the communities they bleed.
I am going to buy my son the laptop of his dreams, was going to wait until his birthday, but think he deserves it now.
I feel like pretending as though this CEO bought it for him himself, though knowing my son, he'd probably skype the jerk and thank him, this and would realise it was me who really bought it.

How did your son discover this? The company is probably wondering how a 16 year old was savvy enough to find a hole in their software. They might even have known about it before your son found it or they're angry that their slackness was discovered.
Personally I'm sick of these multinationals sharing our personal details with anyone and everyone. There is no software that is safe and obviously few maintenance safeguards are used. Look at the debacle with the Commonwealth bank ATM machines yesterday - spurting out cash as if there was no tomorrow.
My advice - and unfortunately we live in a cut throat world today - is next time - get your son to sell the information on the black market. You are no longer rewarded for being honest in corporate Australia, although I know that doesn't apply to ordinary individuals - most of them are reasonably decent.

No Mantra, I'm not going to encourage my son to regress to their immoral level...ok, it's a bit of a smack in the mouth, but he knows he's done a good deed, and I will make it worth his while, and keep him on track.mantra wrote:How did your son discover this? He's on a good track, why on earth would I encourage him to take the "If you cant beat them, join them" path?
He's better than that.
Much!

Mantra, I cant tell you how he come to have this in his possession, (because if I do, after a quick google, you will know immediately who the company in question is)... thus will reveal too much, and I want to talk to the CEO myself first, give him the benefit of the doubt, (I can be a reasonable person sometimes)...a chance to do the right thing by a 16 year old kid who saved his ass.
If not, you guys will be the first to know exactly how he come to have their files in his possession, this and who the company and it's partners are too.
You will figure it out for yourselves, I wont have to name drop.
I am not prepared to trash the mans career just yet, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt he may just want to sort it our first, then thank my son.
But between you and me, I think he will require a little encouragement, a gentle prod...OR I WILL TELL HIS COMPANY'S PARTNERS JUST HOW INCOMPETENT HE IS, AND HOW IT TOOK A 16 YEAR OLD TO DO A JOB HE SHOULD HAVE DONE HIMSELF.
He's the company CEO, should know when security has been compromised.
No, i'll call him myself first... give him time to honour my sons good deed.

It's possible it was being hacked inside the organisation. You are better off contacting the Chairman or one of the directors - if you can find his details. If this did happen under the CEO's watch - I doubt he will acknowledge you or your son and brush you both aside as being menaces. These big boys can get nasty when threatened - seriously.

He has asked my son not to tell others about what's happened, this and we have securely stored copies (being kept with a trusted close family friend) of the files in question that would bring the company to it's knees, so with all due respect Mantra, I don't think he'll be brushing me aside any time soon, and I will be making this very clear when I speak to him soon.mantra wrote:It's possible it was being hacked inside the organisation. Also, I agree with you re- the hacked-from-within factor, best of all, we know who!

sounds like an extortion attempt to me, the company in question should be informing the police.we have securely stored copies (being kept with a trusted close family friend) of the files in question that would bring the company to it's knees, so with all due respect Mantra, I don't think he'll be brushing me aside any time soon, and I will be making this very clear when I speak to him soon.
