We actually do place a great deal of value on our pets, they become defacto members of our society... and yes, even our families. Shooting or posioning someone's family dog is dealt with much more harshly (all things being equal) than killing a feral dog, because you are not only hurting the animal, but also the owner.

I believe there is as much free will in an atheistic universe, as there is a creationist universe.

God is said to have a divine plan for us all and god is perfect and infallible and omniscient. This means zero free will. We are just god's puppets following the script.

Yep, that's pretty much what I meant. There is just a different base cause in a theists universe, the only thing that changes is that the "base cause" (ie. gawd) tells us that he has give us free will (as some sort of excuse for not making our lives perfect).

But, back in the real world, free will isn't a given either. There is some pretty convincing evidence (from brain scans) that the instinctive part of our brain makes most decisions well before we consciously justify them. I'm not convinced that it kills free will, myself (well, not in any way that doesn't define free will into nothingness anyway).
