Atheism leads to Futility.
I have seen the light Dring... I no longer believe that our universe was created or is influenced by a supernatural being. Indeed I do not believe in any thing that is beyond natural. But I am struggling with the consequences of this new belief and I am hoping that you have answers which are not in agreement with me.
First up, the universe is causal. There is no free will. All my actions are caused by previous actions right back to conception. That I think I have free will is an illusion 'caused' by self awareness.
Secondly, there is no meaning to the universe or anything in it.
My existence... all existence is futile.

As a teacher and representative of the teachers in general in our public school system, you are proving yourself to be seriously sub standard and a worry for parents with secondary school students. Why not live up to your self professed job description and actually show us what you can do? You teach reason yes? (One can live in hope) Well, this is a classic and ancient argument so be my guest and prove yourself a worthy teacher.Ethnic wrote:Is your real name Nutty McFuckingnuts?

I don't teach hippy bullshit where empty-headed wombats like you can shower themselves in their own self-glory whilst riding their moral high horse. I teach facts, hard core fucking facts.Sappho wrote:I dare you!
Who gives a fuck what you or anyone else believes in. That's the beauty of freedom and intelligence. We can believe in whatever the fuck we want. Why go on about it? Have you no life? They're available online, just don't tell Gerry Harvey.
Re: Atheism leads to Futility.
Only spiritual nutjobs fuck on about what the meaning of life is. Science has known the meaning of life for centuries. The meaning of life is to reproduce so you can pass your genes onto the next generation and ensure the survival of your family line. You were born because your parents wanted to pass on their genes and your job is to continue to pass on your ancestor's genetic legacy. Case closed.IQS.RLOW wrote:Well, the meaning of life is.....

Four things are certain in life. 1. The above statement. 2. Death. 3. Taxes. 4. Roger Federer looks silly in a yellow hat.
Re: Atheism leads to Futility.
Causality is a fact. It is a fact of science. It has nothing to do with morality. It has nothing to do with hippie bullshit. That fact has consequences of which you show absolute ignorance.Ethnic wrote:I don't teach hippy bullshit where empty-headed wombats like you can shower themselves in their own self-glory whilst riding their moral high horse. You bark real ugly bitch, but you got no bite.
Well, most parents, of which I am one, would say that teachers should give a fuck. That it is there responsibility to give a fuck. That it is their job description to give a fuck. That it aint right to believe like... whateva... if there aint no reason and logic in that belief.Who gives a fuck what you or anyone else believes in. That's the beauty of freedom and intelligence. You are a dumb arse teacher who offers nothing to our young beyond attitude and arrogance. You fail!

OMFG! You really are hard core stupid. You think that the function of sex equals the meaning of life. Well you are wrong. A function is not necessarily a meaning and definitely not a meaning in the context being used in the OP. What's more dumb arse teacher... science does not seek to explain the meaning of life. You are a stupid and irresponsible teacher to imply it does by claiming that science knows the meaning to life.Ethnic wrote:Science has known the meaning of life for centuries. And finally, you profoundly stupid barking bitch, this thread is about the futility of Atheism and beyond your ability to comprehend let alone explore in debate... so fuck off and find yourself a remedial thread to post your trashy serial drama shit within. You don't cut the grade. You just failed again.

Interesting Sappho. Existence to most people appears to be a quest for happiness. I don't know if we can lead happy lives, but only experience happy moments. We can remember these moments when thoughts of futility surface and these memories can keep us relatively buoyant.First up, the universe is causal. There is no free will. All my actions are caused by previous actions right back to conception. That I think I have free will is an illusion 'caused' by self awareness.
My existence... all existence is futile.
Existence to me - more than momentary happiness, is contentment and that's a state of mind. I'm an agnostic, but have had religious moments leading not to happiness or even contentment, but perhaps tranquility which, although not exactly stimulating, is comforting in tough times.
As intelligent human beings we have to seek the meaning. Some believe it is found through organised religion - but others choose to find it alone and that's when the path becomes more difficult. You need to find little things of value to hold onto when the obstacles seem insurmountable and that helps.Secondly, there is no meaning to the universe or anything in it.
Re: Atheism leads to Futility.
Absolutely correct Mantra... most people believe that for life to be meaningful one must seek happiness/ contentment. That however is as causal as everything else. Psychologically, humans are equipped with pleasure and pain receptors which teach us that pleasure is good and pain is to be avoided. It takes no leap of faith to see that our biology is causing our definition of life's meaning.mantra wrote: Interesting Sappho. Existence to most people appears to be a quest for happiness. More interesting still, is that to 'quest' is to engage free will and there is no free will in a determined universe. There is merely cause and effect. Our self awareness and our existence only in the moment, from one moment to the next moment, lulls us into a false security where we 'feel/ perceive' that we have free will. Science however is constantly providing evidence that this is an incorrect view. One neuron fires, stimulated by an outside source perhaps, which causes another and then another in a causal continuum lasting a fraction of a second, with the effect upon the conscious mind of having had a free willing thought. And it wasn't free will, no matter how you 'feel' it. It was just a collection of causally related neurons within a neural network in the brain that then translated that bio-mechanical process into free will.
The problem for atheists who would put their trust in science is that even the little things have no meaning because there was no free will. Existence is a causal happening only. We are puppets with causality pulling at the strings if you will. Even the search for meaning, although caused by previous causal relationships is futile because it denies the fundamental nature of the causal universe by seeking to add some element which does not exist. As intelligent human beings we have to seek the meaning. Some believe it is found through organised religion - but others choose to find it alone and that's when the path becomes more difficult. You need to find little things of value to hold onto when the obstacles seem insurmountable and that helps.
We are slaves to our biology and neural psychology, both of which are meaningless. We do now, fatalistically what was always going to be because the causal lineage was established well before our existence and self awareness. That I write this now, was always going to be, because the causal links leading up to this writing, had made it so and not so any other eventuality.
At this point someone might bring into debate the uncertainty principle as evidence of possibility. But the uncertainty principle merely states that you cannot know position and velocity with any accuracy. You can only know one or the other. If you measure velocity you can only know the probability of its position. If you measure position, you can only know the probability of its velocity. This says nothing about cause and effect, but could quite possibly say much about flaws within the axioms upon which maths is founded.
