I've owned 2 roosters - one as a kid and one not so long ago as a pet for 4 years. I hated every moment of his existence, but felt sorry for him and couldn't bring myself to wring his neck which I was tempted to do a thousand or so times.

That's exactly what they do - crow every morning before light, keep your back doorstep filthy and attack males and small animals with those great talons.
