On a serious note, I think so long as you are fit and healthy,... this and have amniocentesis in the later years, then I cant see the problem with older mothers having babies.

My aunt tried to conceive for 20 years ... first marriage broke down due to her not being able to conceive first time round.

She then had her first and only child at 39 to her lovely second husband, but she was and still is a health and fitness junky, is now 60 but doesn't look a day over 40. Amazing really.

Different people, different age cut-offs I think, I believe physical fitness and good health are key determinants.

Mature mothers appear to be more settled and relaxed with their new babies, (I have observed this).. possibly maturity, this and relief that after years of trying they finally succeeded?

Being financially settled also may play a role in overall state of well being, younger couples in their 20's are not usually as well off as older couples in their 30's 40's.

You have all heard the old wives tale about the eggs not being as fresh as they were yesterday, ovum deterioration etc,... and in a sense, this is true, but so long as amniocentesis rules out your more serious chromosomal abnormalities, and the mother is healthy and takes really good care of herself before, during and after her pregnancy, then I think up to 45 in special circumstance, (whereby a couple have tried for years to conceive though have failed)...is fine.

I think it really depends on the individuals, both mother and father...some couples in their 40's look fitter and are healthier than some younger obese pregnant teenage mums you see waddling about with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths.

I will just add, my cousin, 11 years younger than me graduated from university with a law degree, so my aunts ovum must not have been too deteriorated if this is any indication of her ovums health.

Also, her husband was in his mid 50's when they conceived, and is also a fitness guru.
