Australia is the only country with no restrictions on the age of IVF recipients and the costs are becoming astronomical. The success rate is less than 2% in women over the age of 44.
Prior to the introduction of the Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) in March 2004, patients were required to pay a significant percentage of costs for ART services covered by Medicare. A recent analysis suggests the average cost of an ART live birth is $32,903. This includes government, private insurance and patient out-of-pocket expenses. Previously, most of these costs were met by the patients. Under the EMSN, the Australian government now meets 80% of out-of-pocket costs for ART services provided out of hospital once a set annual threshold is reached. In 2003 Medicare expenditure for ART services was $50 million; while in 2005 expenditure totalled $108.4 million – representing a 117% increase over two years. It seems likely that these costs will continue to climb.

The above study was done in 2005/6 - but there is no doubt the costs have increased significantly since then. There will have to be legislation eventually introduced. It's ridiculous that women over 44 can spend unlimited government funds on IVF attempts when 98% of the time it's unsuccessful. Doctors do try and advise against it - but as there's no legislation, there's nothing much they can do.

As it's free now - the system is open to abuse.

I don’t know, I can see all sides of this issue; from my perspective I guess it all depends on the view one has about the value to life.

“To be or not to be?”

Is it better to be the child of a 70-year-old mother who will probably die while you are still young?

Or is it better to not be at all?

I have been, through good and bad, and I am glad I have been, so I must vote “TO BE”!

This is a debate that nobody can win, since it does depend on "natural" rights. I notice that the UN Charter on Human Rights says something about motherhood and its right to protection, whatever that means, but since it's really a matter of interpretation (and since most of the Articles in it aren't observed by anyone much) it comes down to personal opinion.

It's not a matter of denying anyone anything, it's more whether we have a responsibility to "fix" something that nature might have got wrong, if you see it in those terms.
