American corporate agriculture is exporting its corn-fed feedlots to Australia to replace the Australian grass-fed animal as US corporate agriculture destructive practices are drying up the vast aquifer that lies under the Great Plains States. Brazil is another country targeted by US corn interests. It is in the best interests of the Australian consumer to steer (no pun intended) away from corn-fed beef.

Oz has plenty of aquifers but some are being contaminated with sulfuric acid laced uranium from In Situ [acid] Leach mining (not unlike Texas' aquifer contamination with toxic alkaline solutions) and if coal seam gas fracking gets going, virtually every town and city will require reverse osmosis (or better if available) desalination facilities in the not too distant future.

There is going to be no way to feed the world without totally embracing GM production, and chemical enhancement of growth.

GM free is a luxury of the wealthy west that with growing population pressures and increasing global demand for food, in particular the rise of the Chinese middle class which will see huge increase of demand for protein rich food sources, even the wealthy west will not be able to afford.


The other thing Australia in particular needs to consider is protecting domestic food supply, it does not bode well for any future country to rely largely on imported food supply when there will be fierce completion for that supply.

Rest assured, if/when Australia ever needs to rely primarily on it's own food resources, it will have the willpower required to overcome any currently perceived obstacles.

This is merely a publicity stunt by Coles. Sure they will absorb the extra costs........for now. The long-term trends will be interesting to observe. I doubt that they will resist passing on the added costs permanently, they'll do what they always do and slowly bring the price rises in.
