TONY EASTLEY: US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks show that the Australian Government was willing to accept a compromise on whaling with Japan as recently as February last year.

At the time the Government was talking publicly about taking Japan to the international court over whaling and just a few weeks later called for whaling to be phased out entirely in the Southern Ocean.

The WikiLeaks material reveals that at the time a compromise was being tossed around.

How can anyone trust these lying fucks?

Heard Sea Shepherd's Paul Watson being interviewed last night. He said the Japs are hunting in a sanctuary, so there can be no compromise.

I think the Japs should be allowed to hunt whales as much as they like in Japanese waters, the fact whales have pretty much been exterminated in Japanese waters would be their problem.

If Sea Shepherd had a torpedo boat they could hunt Japanese whalers for scientific purposes.

I've always said/thought ...

We have no mandate to impose recently acquired cultural taboos on the Japanese people. Since when is it OK to tell other countries what they can and cannot eat?

... so long as whoever they are hunt in their own territory ... so if they damage their ecosystem, they've got to live with it

This is probably a completely new thought process for you but how about "the truth"? I know that their leftwing support base has trouble handling the truth hence why they have been caught out being devious...but thats Liebor and the left for you

I used to say that Japan should be allowed to whale but Mantra helped me see the light a bit on this issue. The truth is that most Japanese hardly or never eat whale meat. In fact a lot of it ends up as dog food, frozen in storage for long periods or thrown out because the Japanese are demanding beef, pork and chicken. The fact that the industry is heavily subsidised by Japanese taxpayers sums it up nicely.

The illegal trade of choice cuts is a worry though.
