Dring, I have known a few fundamentalist Christians in my time, many I have known, despite their prostrations of love thy neighbor, enjoy the fight dirty. They love your type of insulting argument, In their minds it proves a life of reason is not so reasonable.

What confuses them is when you kill them with kindness.

Maybe so, but we are 5 pages in now and not a single believer has taken up my offer. Cowards!

BTW, has anyone noticed the complete absence of references to god, christianity and the baby jesus on family first brochures? I have received a few in the mail this election and there is no mention of the magic poof. See, they know that their beliefs are laughable to the majority and that is why they conceal them.

I can't recall having any Christians on PA?

Hell, I had to take up their cause just to keep an argument going and I am a fuzzy sort of pantheist.

As to Family First, I had a great laugh when they tried to do a preference deal with the Australian Sex Party and the latter said "oooooooooooooooooooooooooo no. Now I do feel dirty."

Get up and vote for the Sex party so when you are old you can keep it up.

Viagra on the PBS now and forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too many atheists tiptoe around the contrived delicate sensibilities of theists. Rub their noses in it, I say.
I object to the use of the term 'sensibilities' when commenting on superstitious matters.
I think the term 'sensitivities' to be more appropriate when mentioning irrational concepts.

The way it will work is..............you tell me why you believe in god, and I'll tell you why you're an idiot.

:ugeek:
I believe in a god/s, that is not found in religious texts, because there is no evidence to prove otherwise.

Have fun with that Dring.

Thanks for playing, Sappho, even if it is, I suspect, only in jest.

Coincidentally, this very subject came up last night with the in-laws. I mentioned that I had ordered some religion-bashing stickers from evolvefish.com, at which point mother-in-law triumphantly stated that, sure, she couldn't prove that god existed, but I couldn't prove that he didn't exist!!

Jesus fucking Christ, it was only a few weeks ago that I explained very clearly to her why this line of reasoning was utterly moronic, but in the time-honoured fashion of the textbook idiot, she had grimly refused to learn a thing.

Ok, now here's why you're an idiot, Sappho:

There is an invisible, purple, thirteen centillion-headed giraffe in your house right now, Sappho. He is the size of VY Canis Majoris, his favourite food is blue vein cheese, he likes to make balloon animals, and he always follows you into the toilet to watch you take a dump. He grooves on the funk. The reason he can fit into your house is because he's all magic & shit.

Now, I may not be able to prove that this giraffe exists, but, but, wait for it..............YOU CAN'T PROVE THAT HE DOESN'T!!!

Does the sentence in caps make you a little uneasy about rejecting my giraffe, Sappho? Does it indeed make you actually believe in the giraffe?

Not a chance, eh? An absurd story sans evidence deserves a good flushing.

What theists need to remember is that the god story is a vastly, immensely bigger crock of shit than my giraffe crock.

And of course believing in god due to the inability to disprove his existence compels the theist, if they wish to be intellectually consistent, tee hee, to believe in every fictional character in every fiction book ever written in the history of the universe.

Whilst I don't believe in god, I don't disbelieve either. That makes me agnostic. I suspect that our debate will show very clearly why I am agnostic
Ok, now here's why you're an idiot, Sappho:
And equally, why you are an idiot too... LOL.

Such is the difference between fact and believe, between deductive and inductive reasoning. It is a fact that a square is defined by 4 lines of equal length at right angles to one another. It is a believe that such an animal as you described is in my house. Facts are either true or false. Beliefs are either more of less persuasive. So, whilst I am yet to be persuaded that this creature is in my house, I cannot discount it as untrue.
Not a chance, eh? An absurd story sans evidence deserves a good flushing.
It is highly improbable, but not impossible.
What theists need to remember is that the god story is a vastly, immensely bigger crock of shit than my giraffe crock.

Again, of all things imagined and subsequently expressed, they can be improbable, but not impossible. Arm chair atheists confuse fact with belief, deductive with inductive reasoning.

Your argument merely persuades by playing with the idea of belief. It does not express fact. And because it only persuades, it does not disprove my belief in god/s that are not found in religious texts.
