A Spanish woman claims she has become the legal owner of the Sun after registering it as her property with a local notary and now plans to charge those who use it.
Angeles Duran has come up with a plan that will distribute profits made from the Sun across Spain Photo: CORBISBy Fiona Govan in Madrid 4:46PM GMT 01 Dec 2010
Angeles Duran, 49, from Vigo in Spain's northwestern region of Galicia, applied for ownership of the fiery star at the centre of our solar system after learning that similar claims had been made by an American on the Moon, Mars and Venus.
Although the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 prevents any government from staking their claim over celestial bodies it does not extend to private individuals, an opinion backed by her notary after consulting legal bodies in Spain.
Last week Miss Duran was issued with a document that declares she is "the owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, at an averaged distance from Earth of around 149,600,000 kilometres" (93 million miles).
"I know the law and backed my claim legally," she told local media. "I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first."
She announced that she now plans to profit from her property and wants to charge those whose benefit from its energy.
She claims to have met representatives from Spain's Ministry of Industry to discuss levying a fee on photovoltaic plants for converting the sun's energy into electricity.
"When you have a property it makes sense to make use of it. Power companies profit from the rivers which belong to everyone so I hope to take advantage of the sun."
Miss Duran has come up with a plan that will distribute profits made from the Sun across Spain with half the proceeds going to the government, 20 per cent to the nation's pension fund, 10 per cent dedicated to ending world hunger and ten per cent on research. She says she will keep 10 per cent of the earnings from the Sun for herself.
"It is time to start doing things the right way, if there is an idea for how to generate income and improve the economy and people's wellbeing, then why not do it?" she said.

What a good idea. I wish i came up with this one.
I think i will claim the north star and anyone who uses it to navigate will need to pay me for it.
Also i claim Mars and NASA will need to pay me for the right to visit to look for life. man I am going to make millions.

Bugger Mars is already claimed.
I claim the next asteroid that will hit Earth with over 90% probability in the future. The planet will have to pay be quilions to allow it to be moved off course or blown up. Now I am trolling the net for it. that should leave some money for future generations.
The Law is an ass and space claims will be a good reason for war in the future.

She has no legal right to claim the sun, just because she says it's hers
The law may be an ass, but it's not that stupid. Without somehow staking a claim, she has no chance... and even then, I doubt it would be allowed, given the longrunning precedence of community use.

Aussie will have to sit this one out due to a conflict of interest.
He is also making a claim based on his belief that the object of the plaintiffs case is located and radiates from his posterior region

The moon is the back side of the sun and someone already has laid claim to the moon. This Spanish woman doesn't have a legal leg to stand on.
