I wash dishes by hand..dont garden ( even tho I'd love too, but can only do so in pots),the soil here is hopelessly impoverished ..I sew when my machine is behaving (I'm hopeless at the maitenence side of it) and I use old items of clothing and or recycled anything to make all kinds of houshold items I wouldnt normally buy .

If a recession hits with any degree of severity I think we will cope just fine..
Why are the left always accused of being away with the fairies and non realists... I have no idea..I feel my version of the world is as sound as anyone elses'.

Just throw and lawn clippings, tree clippings, kitchen vege scraps etc in a pile. I dig a hole for my kitchen scraps because otherwise the possums get into it.

Economists urge cut in super contributions

A group of economists is urging the Federal Government to temporarily cut employers' superannuation contributions to stimulate consumer spending.

They have written to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd asking him to drop employers' compulsory payments from 9 per cent of wages to 6 per cent from next month.

The economists want the Government to then increase super contributions to 12 per cent from 2015.

One of the group, Nicholas Gruen, says some people would spend the money.

"In a long-term sense that's not a good thing, in a short-term sense, it's a very good thing because it means that that's keeping the economy going, it's keeping people employed and so on," he said.

"So we're suggesting that what we're doing with the super is to pull that forward and then to sort out the problems that that creates in the future."

Jesus Christ! Some of us are trying to achieve a retirement age of before 85 here. Without asking the government for a handout in order to exist.

It could be a good idea. It does make sense form an economic perspective to drop the contributions for a while, but you'd want to make up for it afterwards by increasing them. However the politics would be very difficult. I think it's better to go at it with interest rates and handouts.

In fact, if super was given to the reserve bank to control in the same way that interest rates are, and they were mandated to make it average out to the same percentage, it could work very well. I don't see the need though.

Apparently St Kevin doesn't either. I suspect it's too politically risky. And it's too early to tell what effect the other measures will have.
