Dear old Dennis Shannahan in the national shit-sheet has wasted no time in calling the release of the business case a humiliating backdown. After months of decrying the government for not doing a cost-benefit analysis - a pointless exercise that would tell you nothing in reality - he now heaps shit on the release of a business case.

I really do hope that all the loudest detractors are going to flatly refuse to use any new, enhanced applications arising from the NBN - you know, as a matter of priciple.

hahahahahaha

I bet Julia figured Mr X would make one last bid for relevance and media attention and so refused to hand out a summary until the last minute.

The OO has an agenda, protecting Rupert’s Foxtel! And supporting the Libs.

Lots of journos are calling it a backdown because that is exactly what it was. Just another badly handled issue in a long and growing line of badly handled issues by an incompetent govt more intent on posturing than governing.

It's still not looking good though. To make the scheme viable - 8,300 million people have to sign up to it. If this is successful then there's compensation to pay out to rivalling telcos who will lose heavily and probably not be in a position to compete.

There are already Tasmanians who have signed up to it - having serious problems with the landline and broadband services. It will take years to straighten all these technical issues out.

The government states that by 2020 it will begin receiving dividends to replace taxpayer funds. If it is sold in 5 years - how will they receive dividends?

The Greens want the NBN closely scrutinised and costed also - and a full public enquiry if the government pushes for privatisation.

Why would the government want to go down the same path as the Coalition did with Telstra?

They aren’t. Telstra was privatised by the braindead Libs as both wholesaler and retailer. Of course that spelled trouble!

NBN Co is wholesaler only.

There were a few minor teething problems in Tassie, nothing major. Optical fiber is not a new product and even FTTH has been done before. Some telcos will go by the wayside if they don’t have decent networks. They can always reinvent themselves as RSPs and make a mint. No compo will be paid.

It will be good. A brand new network, speeds a whole order of magnitude faster, lower internet subscription prices, much lower cost phone calls and basically unlimited data caps. What’s not to like? Also, backhaul has been run out where there was no backhaul or no competition etc.

Education will benefit hugely, as will health, business, government and consumers.

The business case summary released yesterday talked of a ten year rollout, i.e. roll out all done by 2020, the privatisation then won’t occur until 2025. Might be nice to keep NBN Co in public hands, except the brain dead Libs would flog it off for a song and then we will face price hikes etc, all the evils of Telstra. Far better to privatise it sensible before the Libs wreck it.

speeds a whole order of magnitude faster
Bwhahahaha

The basic offering will be 12Mb/s. This will be less than what some people are getting already on ADSL+ so people will have to pay a shitload more to get what they already had
