Second blast at NZ coal mine

Post by Jovial Monk » Wed Nov 24, 2010 3:58 pm

Watching that on Channel 7, Families of miners furious, hinting at a coverup.

Seriously, time to stop mining coal and move to nuclear, 4th Gen, fast breeder reactors. Coal mining is too fucking dangerous, not to mention the GHG aspect! 4th Gen nuclear is safe, little waste, no danger of a reactor exploding.

.....and you reckon it won't be politicized, NOIQ?

(Yeak, the Monk's timing is dreadful, but no doubt, in the weeks to come, others will be saying exactly the same.)

Its certainly a dangerous occupation,it would have been to good to be true to have another success like Chile,,,

Open cut mineings the way to go.

You are probably right, but it was just a hopeful piece of desperation to compare the Chilean Mine with the NZ one. Chile = collapsed copper mine, NZ = underground explosion in a coal mine.

One on my Taxi Mates worked at Mt. Isa underground. From day one, he told me that these NZ miners were buggered.

We had our own mine tragedy in Tasmania not so long ago. I'm not sure how primitive some of our mines are here - but with most states allowing rampant exploration and mining - we're bound to see more accidents in the future.

It was an impossible situation to start with. They couldn't risk more lives when a further explosion was almost a certainty.

Nuclear is too costly for our small population and there is a lot of opposition to it - thank goodness.

No, nuclear is fine for our population and there no longer is huge opposition to it. Some NIMBYism propbably.

Do you want coal miners to keep dying, Mantra? I don’t!

That Tassie mine—greed by the mine owners, the pillars (of rock) left to support the roof were insufficient, esp as earthquakes were known to happen there.

Coal mines just blow up because they can fill with methane.

Mining the methane as coal seam gas mining tends to cause contamination of groundwater.

Best forget about coal mining altogether.

No nukes are safe and the industry is incredibly dodgy, which is why they won't invest their own money in any project, the taxpayer foots the bill for construction, opperating subsidies, disposal and decontamination, and they can't get insurance with out govt underwriting.

Nuke fuel processing emits CO2 at every step of the way.
Why pay 4 times the price of coal generated electricity with nuke to achieve a 5% less CO2 emission rate than gas generated electricity. Unless of course you desire radiological material for nuke weapons. And you've still got the ever increasing disposal costs way into the future.
Another pitfall of reactors is they can't self start, but must draw from an existing grid to get going.

Nuke power has never existed anywhere on the planet without massive government subsidies because its a ridiculously expensive method of generating electricity from steam engines bearing fancy titles.
Theres a plethora of safe and far cheaper options.

America's Eggshell Nukes
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/harvey-wa ... 83424.html
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has made it clear that America's 104 licensed atomic power reactors are not accidents waiting to happen.

They are accidents in progress.

And proposals to build a "new generation" of reactors are not mere scams. They comprise a predictable plan for permanent national bankruptcy.
