POWERFUL right-wing union and ALP figure Joe de Bruyn has warned the Gillard government it is courting ''electoral suicide'' by promoting the Greens' agenda, including yesterday supporting consultation on gay marriage.

Mr de Bruyn, who heads the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association and is a member of the ALP national executive, said Labor should have ''knocked on the head'' a Greens motion calling on MPs to gauge their constituents' views ''on ways to achieve equal treatment for same-sex couples, including marriage''.

Labor's backing enabled the motion, which had been amended slightly in negotiations between its Green sponsor Adam Bandt and the ALP, to pass 73-72, with the support of independents Tony Windsor, Rob Oakeshott and Andrew Wilkie. Independent Bob Katter and West Australian National Tony Crook opposed it.
