Thanks to CSIRO, the internet experience of those who will get wireless could be much brighter than originally thought:

CSIRO has developed wireless technology that could bring 12Mbps connectivity to rural Australia via a television set-top box.

The so-called Ngara system provided up to six users with a constant data transfer rate, regardless of others' uploads, within the spectrum of a single, seven-megahertz television channel. [[This lack of scaleability is just one reason wireless will never be the main network—JM]

According to Gartner's wireless research director Robin Simpson, the network could use analogue television channels as Australia moved to digital technology.

"This means any rural property or business that can currently receive TV signals could in future connect to high-speed internet just by using a new set-top box," he stated.

Ngara had a spectral efficiency of 20 bits per second per Hertz - 10 times the industry's minimum standard, CSIRO claimed.

The researchers were currently testing the downlink component of the technology, which would also be 12Mbps per user, in accordance with the Government's connectivity promises.[[I think they mean the UPlink component, so they have that symmetry that is a key part of the NBN—JM]

Encouraging! 12mbps is not particularly high speed anymore but better than what had been anticipated. The article also talks about up to 6 users being able to connect and up/download without reducing speed, fairly scaleable for a wireless network.

Tere you go Monk. We ended up being both right as we previously discussed. We need a strong backbone and wireless were the NBN can not get to.

Wireless has a part to play. It is a complimentary element of the total solution. Looks like progress for all to me.

Star Wars 3D holograms 'close to reality'
Ever since Princess Leia used a hologram of herself to ask Obi Wan Kenobi for help in the film Star Wars, scientists have been trying to harness the same technology for real.But while they could send a 3D hologram down the line, it took minutes to update – making lifelike movement impossible.

Now a team led by Professor Nasser Peyghambarian, of Arizona University, have developed a way of updating the image every two seconds – making it close to "real time".

Check this out. Now this is an application that is going to need the full bandwidth of any network to make a reality when it comes.

Imagine being at home—somewhere, likely in the regions—and attending a conference as a hologram, able to move around, talk to people in small groups etc. Needs massive computing power and the NBN to do it. Won’t be the first application but just shows you what the NBN will make possible!

Oh dear, those without any understanding of matters should not make stupid comments in public

The article re the CSIRO networking over analog TV spectrum mentions six users can be on it before serious speed degradation occurs. Someone has missed that little point and reckons that should be used in metro areas instead of the NBN! Ummm even a typical street, even one without blocks of units, would have more than six users! Goodbye 12mbps, hello 1.2mbps at slow times, worse than dial up speeds in peak hours!

To have that system work in metro areas would need a tower every 10 houses, all backlinked with fibre and so MORE expensive then the NBN!

In the rural backblocks that system would work really well!

There are some that will jump onto the NBN for the high definition porn, that will not be me tho.

I see the csiro has another breakthrough, developing wireless communications technology which uses the old analogue tv spectrum. This could be the icing on the cake for the nbn, giving good coverage for remote areas. Conroy has expressed interest.

The porn industry are the earliest adopters of all new information technology. They will be the first to use it commercially.

Yup, and those who do will cross-subsidise the educational uses of the NBN.

Monk - no matter how many ways you put it - Australia really can't afford the NBN at the moment. If a portion of that amount had been allocated to more rail links or water storage - it would be far more beneficial to us.

I think we'll run out of money before it's even halfway complete - or there will be a change of government to put a halt to it.
