Age 70 Licence Cancellation?

Are Australian seniors about to lose their licences at age 70? Major changes are being proposed in 2025 that could affect how long older drivers can stay behind the wheel. If you're aged 70 or above—or care for someone who is—this is a must-watch update.
In this video, Aussie Pension Hub breaks down the latest licence policy reforms being considered across Australia. From mandatory medical checks starting at age 70, to possible on-road driving assessments, we’ll explain what’s true, what’s changing, and how it affects your freedom to drive.

Hmmm. There are certainly some dangerous oldies on the road who shouldn't be driving but I thought you didn't need a medical assessment, before 75, unless a doctor recommends it?

My neighbour is 85 or 86 or maybe even older and driving is her independence but she doesn't walk so well so I'm not sure if she should be driving or not. I wouldn't get in a car with her to find out though lol.

I don't agree with this, my parents are both 71 and they drive perfectly fine.
A medical at 75 sounds OK.
Under this progressive woke government we are becoming quite ageist aren't we.
Get this.....
A few years ago one of our university lecturers came into our classroom to give a talk about neurodiversity and it's impacts on community safety and well-being.

Her son, diagnosed with autism L2, killed himself and the other driver of a vehicle, an 80 year old woman, and despite her own concerns about her sons driving abilities he was able to drive a high-powered vehicle, which he'd purchased himself.

Should people with neurodiversity & mental health issues be identified and screened also?

Note- Neurodiversity and mental illness are two very different things, however both have their limitations and present as potential causes for concern on our roads in certain circumstances, as can our aging bodies and brains.

Where do we draw the line?

Should everyone be medically assessed for fitness to drive, particularly when they have conditions/diagnosis' which may impact upon their ability to make appropriate decisions when driving?

Let me put it another way.... If you knew the driver of your child's school bus was a schizophrenic or autistic, how would you feel about them driving your precious cargo to school each day?

Or would you feel more comfortable with 75 year old Des or Mavis the bus driver?

Call me ageist, sexist, discriminatory whatever, but admittedly, I would take my chances with Des.

In other words, if we are going to start cramping down on ageing drivers and assessing their fitness to drive, then perhaps we should start assessing other known groups of concern too.

ADHD kids are definitely another group worthy of considering, especially when concentration is limited.

Perhaps all new and current licence holders should have a full Psychometric evaluation?

Ok, I'm being a tad facetious, but how long is a ball of string?

I don't think this would get my daughter to dance classes 4 nights a week and eisteddfods either.
Just her costume wardrobe and make-up & dance footwear alone would make that poor mule sag.

Poor wretch.

:c

Then there's her extensive Labubu collection 😁 ( ugly little things)

How about we cramp down on migrants holding licences in their home countries and being allowed to drive here without being tested?

Not to mention the ratio of SUVs vrs regular sized cars, especially those with bullbars.

Regional areas understandable, but for urban landscapes, they're assault vehicles in the wrong drivers hands.

Remind me again why our governments still continue to allow high-performance vehicles to be registered again?

My ex used to drive his through a Hungry Jack's or Maccas drive through and take half of it with him in his SUV.
He invented the concept of "loaded fries" here in Australia, long before fast food chains rolled them out. His fries came fully loaded , complete with bricks, speaker box, drive through windows and menu boards. :rofl

Some people just can't drive for shit. Really. Regardless of age.
