Outrageous claims to be substantiated

Post by Super Nova » Wed Sep 29, 2010 4:29 pm

SPECIAL Minister of State Gary Gray wants to have a law in place for the next election that would require claims made in political advertisements to be substantiated as true.

Mr Gray is also planning an overhaul of the rules for lobbyists that would broaden public oversight to cover their contact with key independent MPs.

Mr Gray, a former national secretary of the ALP, recalled that years ago advertisements had to be approved by the Federation of Australian Commercial Television Stations.

But ''what we saw in 2010 was a completely deregulated environment where it became possible for outrageous claims to be made in television advertising that were not substantiated'', he said. Mr Gray was open to views on what the model should be, and might ask the joint parliamentary committee on electoral matters for its view.

This is a laugh. This assumes that the public can not tell when they are bullshiting us or not. I think that when your competitor tell porkies it is up to you to raise the issue during the election and use that to discredit them. Why do we need laws on this. Pollies have been bull-shitting us since the dawn of time. It is part of the game. If they get away with... well done... if they get caught and it damages them... tough.

It's a big boys game and they play rough and dirty.
