Australian Ambassador to the United States Kevin Rudd is under fire after spending tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars on a pride party in Washington, DC.

The details of the former Labor leader’s spending were first revealed by the Sydney Morning Herald after documents were obtained under Freedom of Information laws.

The glamorous event took place at Mr Rudd’s residence in Washington DC, and came only three months after the former prime minister began his tenure as Ambassador to the US.

Among the hefty costs were two drag queens who were hired to perform, including popular Australian entertainer DJ Kitty Glitter, who has risen to fame globally and tours around the world.

The embassy paid Kitty Glitter $4,262 in total which included $1000
in reimbursement for her flights from New Jersey to Washington,
and then from Washington to Florida.

Around $600 was also spent to have Washington-based drag queen Crystal Edge perform.

Decorations were also a massive splurge with an eye-watering $4,500 spent on balloons, including an “organic balloon arch” and a “custom balloon garland”.

Catering, which was the biggest expense, was just over $11,000 and included costs for three chefs and eight waiters.

Meanwhile, the setup of audio visual equipment set the embassy back by $2,600 with a video production company being tasked with the job.

The total cost after currency conversion is estimated to be about $20,000.

$20,000 - could there have been a better way to spend that money?

There was a woman on 3AW today crying -
a solo mother who couldn't put food on her table for her 2 kids -

the salvation army got her a food parcel.

If it proves to be his downfall?
Then money well spent.
