Australia gives away $149 billion in free gas

Analysts say Australia is effectively giving away more
than half of its gas reserves for free.

A new report by The Australia Institute shows multinational corporations are exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) without paying any royalties.

This practice has substantial financial implications, as it involves a significant portion of the nation’s critical gas resources.

According to the Australian Government’s Future Gas Strategy, gas is deemed “critical” to the economy. However, the gas from six of the country’s ten LNG export facilities - comprising four in Western Australia and both in the Northern Territory - pays no royalties at either state or federal levels.

These royalty-free operations account for 56 per cent of Australia’s LNG export capacity.

The financial impact is enormous. Over the past four years, the total value of LNG exports is estimated at $265 billion.

Out of this, LNG produced from royalty-free gas was valued at $149 billion.
Essentially, Australia has given away gas worth $149 billion
to these companies without any financial return.

The Western Australian facilities alone contributed to $111 billion of this total.

The Australia Institute highlights the disparity in contributions from the gas industry compared to other sectors.

For instance, in the financial year 2020-21, major oil and gas corporations like Woodside, Exxon, Shell, Chevron, Inpex, and APLNG reported a collective income of $34 billion but paid no income tax. Despite a revenue surge to $56.3 billion in 2021-22, only $454 million was paid in company taxes.

By contrast, other resource sectors such as iron ore contribute significantly more.

The iron ore industry paid over $10 billion in royalties to the Western Australian Government alone in 2021-22.

International comparisons paint a stark picture too. Qatar, which produces 50 per cent more oil and gas than Australia, receives six times more in government revenue from its oil and gas industry. Norway, exporting less gas but more oil, expects tax revenue from its oil and gas sector to reach an astounding AU$127 billion in 2023 alone.

The Australia Institute suggests that the billions of dollars in forgone revenue could be better utilised.

These funds could be channelled into a sovereign wealth fund similar to Norway’s or invested in enhancing public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and renewable energy projects, thereby increasing living standards and productivity across Australia.

To address this issue, the experts recommend a comprehensive inquiry into the management of Australia’s gas resources, and the imposition of royalties on all gas produced in Australia.

While the gas industry reaps enormous profits, the Australian community sees little return from its non-renewable resources.

The potential benefits from proper management and fair taxation of these resources could significantly enhance national wealth and public services, promoting a more equitable distribution of Australia’s natural resource wealth.

Why am I not surprised.
Australia seems to be the most exploited nation from other nations on the planet.
Probably why no-one wants to invade here - we're already paying them off.

Disgusting! Is that why we are paying outrageous prices for our own gas? That people all over the world pay less than us? Heads should roll over this.

Once again ... our stupid govts have ensured there is no benefit to being an Australian. Just give away our natural resources to the rest of the world for free and make hard working Australians pay for it. :S

Yes - and that sort of money could completely remove poverty from Australia.
We are a wealthy country that just gives our resources away.

We pay cheaper than most for Petrol.
The thing is that by right, we should be paying far less in the first place.
Everything in Australia should be very very cheaper in comparison to the rest of the world (re: 1st world), but they use the 'international' medium (1st world global averages) as a justification to cash in on Australia.
It's like when Gas was dirt cheap here and petrol was moving towards the $2 mark fast. Everyone with big petrol/diesel guzzlers were soon having 'For Sale' signs on them sitting on roadsides and grassy areas. Gas conversion subsidies were brought in so people could convert to Gas.
...then Gas, for no 'official' reason, began to increase in price - which in the end, made Gas no more economical than Petrol/Diesel and these days, people get rid of their Gas cylinders and don't convert.
Think of Australia being like the Gas. Great country, very cheap to run. But the Internationals put pressure on the two Governments to allow them to cash in more and suddenly Australia (Gas) is brought up to be in accordance with other nations (Petrol, Diesel, etc).
They just don't want Australians to 'get ahead'.
Throw in the fact that while the Governor-Generals 'traditionally' serve the UK/GB, the Prime Ministers, regardless of Party, are always working for the USA. When the USA says 'We want you to have GST introduced, because its like the USA's tax on the world, the PM's make it happen'. When the USA says "we want more money for 'protecting you' (from their 'own' enemies)" - the PM's make it happen.

Hell, they didn't even like it when Australia was COVID FREE (beyond very minimal infections in the cities) and Australians were out and about domestically living and making the Economy boom on a domestic level to become the #1 Economy in the World at the time. Nope - USA says to PM, let the Virus in now that you have so-called Vaccines (really just immune boosters, hence the need for more than one jab) and thus Australians were compromised in their quality of life like the rest of the infected world.

The thing is. The USA doesn't want Australia to get ahead. The USA doesn't want Australia to make it look bad. The USA fears that 'convict' Australia will make it look like 'the Criminal' instead.

Kevin Rudd was replaced because he would kowtow to the USA. A reminder to those who become Prime Ministers and don't suck up to a Privatised Political system that jilted the British version in favour of Italian (Rome/Athenian)-Greco, French and German styles instead.
But the world knows that the British (english) version of Politics is the 'future' of the Political world (and why we keep it on our Flag), not the American one (Hail Caesar!). Even Issaac Asimov wrote his famous 'Foundation' series to depict the Fall of this American form of Politics/Empire, etc.
...one day, America will re-embrace the British way (even if Britain is no more at that time).

I reckon we could have changed over to 90% of vehicles running on our own gas
if we would have put our minds to it.
Instead we closed petrol refineries and imported petrol.
We could have been an energy independent country.
The politicians are all traitors - they don't act in our best interests.
They are acting for foreign entities.
What should be the penalty for a traitor?
