It's simple in concept -
as the velocity of a particle increases to a sizeable fraction of the speed of light -
its relativistic mass increases.
It's one of the bizarre effects of special relativity as stated by Einstein.

And you went to Uni just to learn that?

That was 0.01% of what learnt.
It was called modern physics in those days.

To think that the Universe exists just by mathematical interpretation is where it all breaks down.
Outside of Maths (Physics, etc) - its all 'Dark Matter' indeed.
