There are similarities, but no, not on par with it. They are different beasts.

The religion has a god as it's central axiom, while democracy has a political system. Islam is used by it's followers for many things, mainly personal, while the democratic movement has only the purpose of changing the political system of incompatible ideologies.

What? A bunch of "Islamic states", all with different interpretations of what that means? One of them even building an underground wall to protect a Jewish state in their heartland.

Precisely, which is why your statement
Islam is used by it's followers for many things, mainly personal,
is incorrect

Exactly. The principle within Islam is also to adopt its socio-economic policies as a matter of prerequisite.
You cannot separate the religious aspects from the socio-economic aspects

I think Hisri Ali clarifies this to some degree, if Islam is taken literally it is incompatible with democracy because it posits Shria law must be adopted and that Islam is the final truth on everything, allowing no pluralism, but fortunately many, if not most Muslims are ignorant of the grand exclusionary claims of their own religion and only practice the ritualistic aspects of it, these lazy Muslims igonrant of much of the Koran can make perfect democratic citizens.
