World No.1 Novak Djokovic has been told his visa has been rejected and asked to leave Australia later on Thursday.

Djokovic’s lawyers are in the process of challenging the decision, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.


It is unclear if Djokovic will leave Australia on Thursday or if he will remain in the country as his lawyers attempt to overturn the decision. He may be placed in government accommodation or Victorian hotel quarantine in the interim.

With tensions esclatating on Thursday morning, Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic slammed the “harassment” by Australia’s Border Force.

“Serbia is doing everything to see that the harassment of Novak Djokovic is brought to an end immediately,” Vucic said.

Djokovic was reportedly held in an airport room — for nine hours — with border officials grilling him over the evidence for his vaccine exemption. According to his father, Djokovic was separated from his team, and without a mobile phone.

“I have no idea what’s going on, they are holding my son captive for five hours,” Djokovic’s father, Srdjan is reported to have told Serbian media.

“This is a fight for the libertarian world, this is not just a fight for Novak, but a fight for the whole world. If they don’t let him go in half an hour, we will gather on the street. This is a fight for everyone.”
