Hail and strong winds damage cars and homes in Canberra as thousands lose power

A severe thunderstorm that swept across Canberra late on Monday afternoon has left thousands without power and caused damage to homes and cars.

Large hailstones and strong winds caused damage to homes and toppled trees, with reports of cars crushed in multiple locations.

The ACT State Emergency Service said it received 436 calls for help, adding its staff and volunteers worked throughout the night in response.

As of 6:30am this morning, more than half of these requests remained outstanding.

Power provider EvoEnergy said more than 16,000 homes were without electricity "across most of Belconnen", and called for patience as it sent crews out to repair downed power lines.

"Our crews are busy conducting repairs, and we ask for your patience as we’re inundated with reports," the business said on Twitter.

Yeah another one around the corner from my place.

Spent yesterday cleaning up, including cutting up a big branch broken off one of my trees, fortunately missed the house.

Big trees near a house, branches overhanging a house—big danger with storms and with bush fires.
