Five children died in Australia on Thursday after wind lifted the bouncy castle they were in about 32 feet into the air, local police said.

Nine children were in the castle at about 10 a.m. local time when it fell to the ground, Tasmania Police said in a statement. The students at Hillcrest Primary School had been celebrating the end of the school year, the statement said.

Shocking sad thing to happen. Shouldn't these things be staked to the ground somehow? It must have been some gust of wind. So sad, especially at this time of year.

It also stipulates castles should be secured and anchored with anchor points, inspected regularly for wear or rips and supervised at all times.

"Every castle is inspected before it goes out," he said.

"I look at the wind and weather patterns and surrounding terrain when working out if we operate or not.

"You look at the ability of the soil to firmly hold a peg — if it's really muddy, it's not going to do a thing.

"The safety of the kids is always front of mind."

He said most jumping castles purchased in Australia do meet national standards.

"It's only if you import them from China that they have to be adapted," he said.

Kidsafe Tasmania said it would seek to meet with the "government and stakeholders to discuss future implications".
