New Zealand has just initiated its 'traffic light' system (3rd December 2021) which replaces lockdowns as the first response to a covid outbreak.
For the nearly 90% fully vaccinated (87.1% as of 4/12), it will allow varying degrees of freedoms depending on the 'traffic light' status: red will be high alert, orange for medium, with green - the lowest alert.
However, what the currently unvaccinated (6.9% as of 4/12) woke up to on Friday, is that the new freedoms do not apply to them.
Yes, it's one thing to know that was what was always going to happen, it's another to try to buy fish and chips, or a coffee at a cafe, but refused service or entry for not having a vaccine passport. What was OK on Thursday in most parts of New Zealand (bar the Auckland area), now not OK from Friday.
Since 3/12, all hospitality venues and close contact non-essential services (e.g. barbers, hairdressing and gyms etc) are off-limits to the unvaccinated.
No doubt the 'cock-up' theory will likely drive small-business owners to the caution end of the stick and refuse entry and service to the unvaccinated (even if they may actually be allowed to offer service)... Maybe common sense will prevail or a gradual lack of public interest in policing the vaccine passport system will erode it away to nothing.
Whichever way, over the next few weeks, NZ is offering an opportunity to peer over the fence (or across the ditch in this case) to watch the trailer of what a post-lockdown Australia might look like.
