New Sydney Ferries

Post by Black Orchid » Wed Dec 08, 2021 8:59 am

Outsourced to China, Indonesia and Singapore. The Newcastle ferries have been found to contain asbestos.
Paul Garrett from the Maritime Union said "we were warned" about having the boats built overseas.

"At the end of the day, there's no safe asbestos – someone should be sacked," he said.

Sydney ferry operator Transdev ordered the new fleet of 10 river class ferries and three emerald class ferries from Australian ship-builder Birdon.
Birdon outsourced the work to Singapore, Indonesia and China.

All three countries have been flagged by the Australian Border Force on a warning list of nations whose imports have had traces of asbestos fibres.

The Sydney ferries can't go under bridges on the Parramatta which is a total disaster waiting to happen and are now also showing cracks.
Ten new Sydney ferries won't be able to pass under bridges on the Parramatta River with people sitting on the top deck.

Transport for NSW says passengers will need to be called to the lower deck before the ferries can pass under the Camellia Railway Bridge and Gasworks Bridge.

The Opposition's transport spokesman said it was a huge design flaw of the new River Class ferries, which were built in Indonesia.

The Sydney light rail is falling apart as well.
Cracks have been discovered in a new vessel that is replacing the Manly ferries on Sydney Harbour.

""Billions of dollars have been spent, thousands of jobs have been sent offshore, and all we have to show for it is shoddy, overseas built transport infrastructure that is now literally falling apart."

When will we learn that cheap overseas materials, labour and manufacture only end up costing us double in the long run to say nothing of potential lives that could be lost?

As Trevor said in another thread we need to start focusing on bringing manufacturing back home. I'd vote for anyone who is more serious about that than continually raising our immigration quota.

Why cant they stipulate in the contracts that they must be built in Australia.
