Former New South Wales Labor Ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald have been jailed over a mine licence conspiracy.
Key points:
A judge-alone trial found the three men guilty of conspiring to commit misconduct in public office
The three men did not give evidence at the trial
The verdict is the culmination of an ICAC inquiry that started almost a decade ago
Macdonald, has been jailed for at least five years and three months.
Eddie Obeid has been given a minimum three years and 10 months sentence.
Eddie Obeid's son Moses has been jailed for at least three years over the conspiracy.
The three men were found guilty of conspiring for Ian Macdonald to commit misconduct in public office by granting a coal exploration licence for the Obeid family farm in the Bylong Valley when he was Resources Minister.
The landmark case follows a sensational Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry that started almost a decade ago.

i wonder what happened to the millions passed over in brown paper bags?
And the billions the mining companies made
and all the faceless public servants who also pocketed money
The corruption runs deep in our grubberment
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

......... Fullerton found Macdonald committed five acts of misconduct in setting up and granting the licence, Moses Obeid exploited the misconduct and that Eddie was aware of it.
This will be Eddie Obeid’s second stint in jail.
Obeid was jailed for five years in December 2016 after being found guilty of lobbying a public servant to secure lease renewals for two lucrative Circular Quay businesses in 2008, without revealing his family’s financial interests in the outlets. He was released on parole in 2019.
Obeid turns 78 on Monday. He will serve at least three years and 10 months of his prison sentence before being eligible for parole in August 2025. Fullerton recommended that he should be incarcerated in the Long Bay jail hospital wing due to his health. .............

Wonder what the truth is?
I thought 'on bail' meant you could go home.
The news I found said he has to go to jail hospital

It didn't tell the whole story and his bail is mentioned on most sites. As much as I hate the ABC ...
The lawyers for all three men told Justice Elizabeth Fullerton they intended to appeal against their convictions and sentences.
Eddie Obeid, who has comorbidities, was granted bail after his lawyers complained he could contract COVID-19 while being held at Surry Hills Police Station.
His lawyer argued he had been subjected to a "miscarriage of justice" and that for health reasons he should remain on bail.
Moses Obeid and Ian Macdonald have been taken into custody at the Police Centre in Surry Hills until they are moved to Silverwater jail.
However, Justice Fullerton said she was concerned about Eddie Obeid being held at the Police Centre because he was at high risk of catching COVID.
"He risks death," she told the court.
The matter returns to court tomorrow when further details of Eddie Obeid's appeal will be heard.
