Victoria records 1,420 new COVID-19 infections
and 11 deaths

Victoria has recorded 1,420 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases and the deaths of 11 more people with the virus.

The new cases were found from 71,451 test results processed on Tuesday.

It comes a day after a record-high daily tally of 1,763 new infections was reported, the highest for any jurisdiction in Australia since the pandemic began.

"It is probable that ongoing transmissions from cases generated via the superspreading events related to Grand Final gatherings have likely contributed to the notable increase," the health department said yesterday.

Modelling suggests the state is still yet to reach the peak of infections, and hospitalisations are projected to rise alongside new cases — something which has led to fears about the state's healthcare system.

The new infections reported today take the number of active infections in the state to 14,410.

But the state remains on track to lift lockdown once 70 per cent of people aged 16 and older have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, then grant more freedoms at 80 per cent double dosed.

State and Commonwealth vaccination figures differ slightly, but indicate about 83 per cent of Victorians aged over 16 have received at least one dose of vaccine and around 53 per cent are fully vaccinated.

CFMEU claims 'dozens' of COVID-19 cases
now linked to Melbourne construction protest






Dozens of people are now infected with COVID-19 in a cluster linked to a protest outside the construction union's Melbourne headquarters two weeks ago, according to the CFMEU.
Key points:

CFMEU secretary John Setka said up to 40 cases were now linked to a protest at the union's headquarters
The union said at least 12 of the cases were in children under the age of 10
The CFMEU has identified a number of its members who attended the protest but has not expelled them

The CFMEU's Victorian construction secretary John Setka said seven officials and staff had been confirmed to have contracted the virus and "close to 40" family members and close contacts were now infected.

Those numbers and the link to the protest have not yet been confirmed by the health department.

Hundreds of people protesting against mandatory vaccinations in the construction industry gathered outside the CFMEU on September 20, and clashed with union officials.

CFMEU secretary John Setka said the infection had spread to 14 members of one official's family, and at least 12 cases linked to the protest were in children under 10.

"We've got a case of a four-month-old toddler who's got it, young children, grandparents, it is just absolutely terrible," he told ABC News Breakfast.

"My understanding is some of them are seriously unwell, I don't think they're on a ventilator but they're not really travelling that well.

Victoria has recorded 1,638 new locally acquired COVID-19 infections and two deaths.

The deaths take the toll of this outbreak to 70.

The new infections were found from 77,238 test results processed on Wednesday — a record for the state.

They take the number of active cases across the state to 15,074, which is another record high.

The state is still likely days or weeks away from the peak of new infections, with the turning point expected later in the month.

There were 36,672 doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered in state-run hubs, with thousands more delivered through doctors and pharmacies.

About 83 per cent of Victorians aged over 16 have received at least one dose of vaccine and
around 54 per cent are fully vaccinated.

The state remains committed to lifting lockdowns once 70 per cent of the population has had both doses, a target expected to be hit later this month.

Police officers in hospital after
contracting COVID-19 at Melbourne protests

Two Victoria Police officers are in hospital after they contracted COVID-19 at the violent anti-lockdown protests in Melbourne last month.
One is seriously ill in hospital.
They reportedly caught the virus after coming into contact with unmasked protesters.


Both officers reportedly worked at a series of protests in Melbourne in September and are unvaccinated.
The two officers are from an inner city police station.
Another 23 members from that station have now been forced into two weeks quarantine after being exposed to the virus.
Those officers are vaccinated and have returned negative results.
Police Association Victoria secretary Wayne Gatt said neither of the sick officers are in intensive care.
