An acting sergeant from a specialised support unit has been suspended after alarming footage circulated on social media showing the officer slamming a man to the ground.

A Victoria Police officer has been suspended over his actions that led to a man being arrested at Flinders Street Station amid last week's protests in Melbourne.

The 12 second footage - that was shared across multiple social media networks - showed a man speaking to an officer inside the iconic train station as two other colleagues watched on.

A third officer then appeared in shot and grabbed the man around the chest before throwing him to the ground headfirst.

An audible thud echoed through the station after he the man made contact with the ground, with bystanders shocked by the officer's actions.

The man appeared to be unconscious as the officers circled him.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the officer in question has been suspended following early investigations into the incident by both the Transit Safety Division and Professional Standards Command.


A Victoria Police spokesman said investigations were still ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, including the person who took the footage and the person depicted in the vision, are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
