Victoria’s workplace safety watchdog has taken the extraordinary step of charging the state government with 58 breaches over its hotel quarantine fiasco last year.
The Department of Health faces fines of up to $1.64 million.
In a bombshell development on Wednesday afternoon, WorkSafe Victoria charged the department with 17 counts of failing to provide a workplace that was free of health risks to employees.
It was also charged with a further 41 breaches.
The charges related to the state government’s hotel quarantine program, set up between March and July 2020.

The maximum penalty for a body corporate for each of the charges was $1.64 million.
Coronavirus outbreaks at Melbourne’s Rydges on Swanston and Stamford Plaza Hotel, where returned travellers were being quarantined,
led to 99 per cent of Victoria’s second wave of Covid-19 cases and 801 deaths.

Looks like the whole court case is set up so
Dan and any other person will get off Scott free.
The charges are against the Govt. Dept not against any person.

Premier Daniel Andrews and his ministers are the ones who should be “facing justice”
over the charges laid by WorkSafe against the Victorian Department of Health, according to Opposition Leader Matthew Guy.
The Victorian health department has been charged with 58 breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety Act over the Andrews government's hotel quarantine program.
Each of the charges carries a fine of up to $1.6 million.
Mr Guy told Sky News host Peta Credlin the situation is a "complete farce".
"What we have is a government statutory authority charging a government department for ministers' decisions," he said.
"The taxpayer will pay the fine."
The Victorian Opposition Leader said "the buck stops" with Premier Andrews and his ministers.
"They are the people who should be facing justice, not the Department of Health," Mr Guy said.
"There is no accountability left in the state of Victoria.
"The Premier should have resigned a long time ago; his ministers, a number of involved, should have resigned a long time ago."

Re: Dan faces 58 charges in court.
The Central Coast Council stole $600,000,000.00, through misappropriation, handing over millions to shonky consultants ( who most likely handed back a good sum to those who employed them, in brown paper bags) and claimed they had LOST the money, SOMEWHERE.
This is $600,000,000.00 we are talking about.
Multiple times we, the ratepayers, have approached ICAC, and the grubberment for action.
They appointed a slime bag mate of the councellors who has been living it up in the most exclusive, expensive accommodation available, all the while saying he can find no criminal neglegence.
Grubberments look after their own.
You will never get any of them charged, look at howard the coward who took Australia ILLEGALLY to war.
The only logical progress can be via a revolution.

Re: Dan faces 58 charges in court.
Victoria's Labor Party.
The most corrupt govt Australia has ever seen.
My thoughts and prayers are always FOR the people of Victoria first. They have suffered the most over the past few years.
And it's for that reason I started a Facebook group with 2 Victorians who I met online trying to help a Victorian mother grieving over the loss of her son. He never died of Covid19. He committed suicide trying to cope with Dan's irresponsible mismanagement and extreme lockdown measures.
That was the start for me in trying to help those people to come forward and get some support.
What also really kicked it off was this : my husband is a qualified Lifeline counsellor. Over the past 2 years the Lifetime volunteers in Victoria were suffering from burnout as they themselves were facing the traumatic conditions their clients were. The influx of calls just from Victoria were outta control. So NSW came to the rescue. Hubby saw the recruitment drive and joined up. People don't realise that to be a Lifeline Counsellor you pay for your course costs and you work for free.
Anyway that's what kickstarted the process for me. I tried to help where I could - given I was essentially stuck at home with family obligations. Plus my mum's health had deteriorated and she passed (not from Covid19).
We still do not know anyone who has contracted Covid19.
Not one.
