Rupert a nearly 16-year-old rescue dog from Canberra has trouble walking these days. His owner usually takes him for walks in a pram. But in lockdown she decided to upgrade him to a mini-Mercedes Benz remote car otherwise used by children. The fun car was as much for Rupert as the passersby who laugh and smile as they see him on their walks. "It sparks joy," Rupert's owner said.

Almost got a pet today.

I was working in my shed when this tiny ball of fluff wandered in and sat down.
I looked at it and noticed blood, a fair bit, on its neck.
It came to me easy, no collar, no ID.
I washed the neck and tgere was a small wound, but as i didnt know what caused it, i figured a trip to the vet was warranted.
Our vet is pretty good, lives on the premises, and he gave the pup the once over.
No chip, no charge (because we regularly bring in injured natives)
Gave the pup a jab, just in case.
He had no free cages, suggested we take it to the pound.
Not a chance, the after hours drop off are tin sheds with no lights and cement flooring.
So we took it home and wandered the streets asking at each house if tgey knew where he was from.

No luck.
So we took it home, bought some dog food, put down a bowl of water and a blanket in the shed ( no dogs in our house)
About 1/2 hour ago there was a knock on the door.

It seems that the kids were taking the pup for a walk.
A larger dog attacked the pup, who took off.
The kids were unable to keep up and lost him.
This was about 5 klm away.
They heard from friends that we were asking around.

The kids were happy
The family restored
The dog was all over the kids.

But, for a few hours i had a dog and something to do other than sitting around.
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

I reckon they'd make good pets. :)

I have seen them up close at the Werribee zoo near Melbourne.
They are very cute and intelligent.

Canberra men take early morning dip to pull 'shivering' kangaroo from Lake Burley Griffin

When Canberra man Nic Crowther stripped off his pants and jumped into Lake Burley Griffin this morning, he wasn't after a tranquil dip.

Mr Crowther, along with a handful of other Canberrans out for their early-morning exercise in lockdown, had come across a kangaroo stuck in the shallows near Commonwealth Avenue bridge.

"Poor guy was just sitting in there shivering," Mr Crowther said.

"I'm not sure that kangaroos can express a want and a need, but he just looked like he wanted help.
Mr Crowther said the group made a call to wildlife experts to come and assist but eventually decided to "just deal with it in the moment".

In the video of the rescue, Mr Crowther and another man he did not know can be seen trying to calm the kangaroo as they carry it back to shore.
Once the video was posted on social media, the men were hailed as heroes by many in the comments, but Mr Crowther said anyone would have done the same in his position.
Mr Crowther said the kangaroo stayed with its rescuers for a while after it was extracted from the lake.

"I want to think it was saying thank you, but the reality is it was probably a bit confused," he said.

"There was a couple of times it tried to have a bit of a box, but I think it was just in a bit of a confused state."

This morning's lake rescue was not a first for the capital. In 2019 a kangaroo initially defied efforts by water police to free it from the lake — hopping right back in after it was fished out with a jetski.

And it's not just creatures who fall victim to the lake's call — earlier this year, a quick-thinking cyclist "didn't even hesitate" when rescuing a three-year-old boy who had scooted right off the footpath and into the city's watery centrepiece.

I saw that on the news. It was cute. I'm glad they got the poor thing out as so many wouldn't.
