Ohh no.
Do the maths ... 430,000 population here -v- how many in Melbourne? Plus it only takes about 20 minutes to drive across town in Canberra, most roads are 110 kph. So just because one infection Northside doesn't mean it can't be taken Southside in half an hour. Ask Red.
You are just too close to Sydney.
I'm surprised the cases are not much higher.
I think it still takes about 3 hours to drive to Sydney. Nobody wants to come to Canberra, they might run into a Pollie or three. :rofl Some Canberrans, apparently, took off "down the coast" as soon as the lockdown was announced. That takes about 2 hours. :roll They were all told to STAY HOME!
if you run into any pollies give them some lip. :bgrin
I have NOT seen a pollie in the flesh in all the years I have lived here. :rofl

Now Gladys is blaming Canberra for more lockdowns. :rofl Perhaps now Sydneyites will realise that real people live in Canberra and not just the Pollies. :rofl

Canberra Covid outbreak contributed to NSW's state-wide lockdown call: Gladys Berejiklian

Advice that a large number of Canberrans had left the ACT for the South Coast after the ACT announced restrictions contributed to NSW's statewide lockdown decision, Premier Gladys Berejiklian says.

Ms Berejiklian said the number of people who had moved from the ACT to southern parts of NSW was a concern, and formed part of health advice to lock down NSW entirely.

"Yesterday was an absolute wake-up call," Ms Berejiklian said on Sunday.

How will they get back into Canberra?
It's a silly idea to travel in a pandemic.
Many Victorians are stuck in NSW and can't get back home.

Canberra also has some very dumb people. "Down the Coast" is full of Canberrans on weekends, I used to refer to it as "Canberra by the Sea". Go down there and see people you once worked with and haven't seen for years. LOL

Canberra lockdown extended as ACT records 19 new Covid cases, including aged care worker, Lyneham High student

Canberra lockdown extended as ACT records 19 new Covid cases, including aged care worker, Lyneham High student

The ACT's lockdown has been extended to September 2, after the territory recorded 19 new cases on Monday.

The cases included an aged care worker at Greenway Views and a student from Lyneham High School who tested positive.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said this was a "serious situation", and the growing number of cases and exposure sites meant the lockdown would be extended by a further two weeks, after advice from chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman.

"We do not want to see the numbers continue to grow, we do not want to see exponential growth as we have seen in other jurisdictions," Mr Barr said.

"The best way that we can avoid this is to limit our movement.

"Lockdowns are a proven measure to suppress chains of transmission of the virus."

The lockdown was originally due to lift at 5pm this Thursday.

Mr Barr said arrangements for the lockdown extension were being finalised and this would be announced on Tuesday.

The new cases are in addition to the nine, which had been identified prior to the latest reporting period, bringing the ACT's total number of active cases to 28.

There are more than 6500 Canberrans who have identified as close contacts, which is about 1.5 per cent of the territory's population.

The number of exposure sites across Canberra has increased to more than 45.

Dr Coleman said she expected to see cases rise further.

"This is a very concerning progression, but it's not actually for want of a better word particularly alarming; we are expecting to see cases rise," she said.

"This growth in cases is what we see when we talk about cases coming into a community where there is very little restrictions on its spread.

"So we will see a rise in cases and then as the impact of the lockdown does start to work progressively moving forward, those cases will fall.

"We will get to a point in other jurisdictions that we have seen where the new cases have spent their entire period of infectiousness in quarantine."

ACT records 17 new cases

It brings the total number of active cases in the territory to 45.

None of those 45 cases are hospitalised.

Canberrans broke a testing record with 7,380 being conducted yesterday.

Yesterday ACT Health authorities announced a two-week extension to the Canberra lockdown, after a large number of cases were reported in the previous 24 hours.

UPDATED: Barr announces 22 new cases in the ACT, total number active now 67, none hospitalised

UPDATED 11:55 am: Chief Minister Andrew Barr has announced 22 new COVID-19 cases in ACT. All cases have been linked to existing cases.

This brings the total number in the ACT to 67. None are in hospital.

A total of 8417 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours.

Mr Barr has urged people to remain at home and not visit others, but to keep in touch with family and friends by phone or the internet.

Dr Kerryn Coleman confirmed that only four of 67 cases remain under investigation. ACT Health is monitoring all cases, but the list of self-identified close contacts now exceeds 10,000. There are also more than 190 exposure locations.

To remain up to date on the ACT locations, visit covid19.act.gov.au.

NSW recorded 633 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths in the past 24 hours.

Speaking at her daily briefing, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian declared “we haven’t seen the worst of it”.

Sixty people have died in NSW since the Delta outbreak began on 16 June.

9:00 am: The ACT Government is calling for recently retired nurses or nurses taking time off to return to the profession and help the ACT’s COVID-19 efforts after 400 Canberra Health Services and Calvary Hospital staff were forced into isolation.

Contact tracers and testing clinics in the ACT are under mounting pressure to contain the growing delta outbreak as the list of exposure sites continues to grow – expanding into five schools as of Wednesday morning (18 August).

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith also said the government was also looking at ways to incorporate nursing and medical students into the workforce.

If you are interested in joining the nursing ranks and can lend a hand, call 02 5124 6140 or visit the ACT job search website.

8:00 am: Three more schools have been added to the list of COVID-19 exposure sites in the ACT.

This means the virus has sent at least four school communities across Canberra into isolation in the past week.

Anyone at Harrison School primary or secondary campuses on Wednesday, 11 August or Thursday, 12 August between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm is considered a close contact and must get tested and quarantine for 14 days.

Anyone at St Thomas Aquinas Primary School in Charnwood on Thursday, 12 August between 8:30 am to 4:00 pm is considered a close contact.

Anyone at the UC Secondary College Lake Ginninderra gym and cafeteria/canteen on Monday, 9 August between 10:00 am and 1:30 pm is also a close contact.

Yum Cha Cuisine at the Westfield Belconnen food court and IGA in Evatt are also listed as exposure locations.

A full list of exposure locations is available at www.covid19.act.gov.au.

ACT Senator Katy Gallagher has also confirmed on social media that her daughter Evie was one of Tuesday’s positive cases, sending the former ACT chief minister into quarantine for 14 days.
