NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned there will be more COVID deaths after the state recorded 415 new cases and four fatalities.
Key points:

NSW has administered 5 million vaccinations, with 50 per cent of eligible people having one jab
More than 500,000 new Pfizer doses will be given to 16-39-year-old in Sydney hotspots
There were 126,790 COVID-19 tests conducted in the latest reporting period

It comes a day after sweeping new public health rules were announced, including the lockdown of the entire state.

Of the new cases, 42 were infectious in the community, 24 were in the community for part of their infectious period and 273 remain under investigation.

Ms Berejiklian confirmed four people died yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths during the current outbreak to 48.

A woman in her 50s in south-western Sydney died at Campbelltown Hospital and wasn’t vaccinated.
A woman in her 70s died at Royal North Shore Hospital who was only recently given her first dose, so wasn't protected.
A man in his 80s also died at Liverpool Hospital and wasn't vaccinated
A woman in her 80s died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and was vaccinated but did have underlying chronic conditions.

NSW has recorded its worst day of the COVID-19 pandemic with 478 cases and seven deaths with Premier Gladys Berejiklian saying the numbers are "disturbingly high".

Six of the deaths were aged in their 70s and 80s and one was in their 40s in what was the highest number of daily fatalities NSW has recorded since the pandemic began.

A 15-year-old boy who contracted pneumococcal meningitis and COVID-19 also died but Sydney's Children Hospital confirmed the virus was not the cause of Osama Subuh's death.

"The case numbers are disturbingly high and we are, as [chief health officer] Dr Chant said yesterday, at a fork in the road. Do we want the case numbers to come down?" Ms Berejiklian said.

"Are we going to live in fear and have case numbers continue to go up?

Glad they did that and they should do it with all deaths instead of letting everybody assume the people died from The Virus!

We're never going to get back to zero it's about time they changed their tactics with that in mind.

Agreed. People die but using The Virus as the cause of deaths in the hope that it will get everybody vaccinated is really pathetic.

NSW records 452 new COVID-19 cases and
one death as virus spreads to Broken Hill.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the number of COVID cases in NSW is likely to “rise substantially” as the state recorded 452 new infections and another death.
Key points:

Residents of seven Sydney suburbs are warned to stay home and seek vaccination
A woman aged in her 70s died in Westmead Hospital
A record 168,000 COVID-19 vaccines were administered in NSW during the reporting period.

The virus continued its spread through regional NSW.

Sixteen new cases were detected in Dubbo, while there were also 10 infections detected in the Hunter/New England Local Health District (LHD).

One new case was found in each of the Central Coast, Illawarra and, for the first time in the current outbreak, Broken Hill.

The Premier said health authorities were assuming case numbers would continue to rise and the ongoing challenge was to keep vaccination rates up.

"We envisage that case numbers in the next two or three weeks will bounce around and are likely to rise substantially and we have to brace ourselves for that, but our key aim will be keeping people out of hospital and keeping people alive and that's why the vaccination rate obviously helps us with that," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she wanted to "call out" seven Sydney suburbs with residents warned to stay at home but seek vaccination as soon as possible.

The suburbs are Blacktown, Seven Hills, Merrylands, Guildford, Auburn, Bankstown and Greenacre.

NSW records 633 new COVID-19 cases, three deaths

NSW recorded 633 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday.

It is the largest daily total ever recorded in the state.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed three people with COVID-19 have died.

A man in his 60s from south-western Sydney died after being infected with COVID-19 at Liverpool Hospital. He is the ninth death linked to that outbreak.

Two men, both from Western Sydney and in their 70s, died at Nepean Hospital.

There have now been 60 deaths linked to the Delta outbreak that began in June, and 116 in NSW since the start of the pandemic.

"What the data is telling us in the last few days is that we haven't seen the worst of it," Ms Berejiklian said.

"And the way that we stop this is by everybody staying at home."

Of the new cases, 224 are from the South Western Sydney Local Health District (LHD), 216 are from Western Sydney LHD, 54 are from Nepean Blue Mountains LHD and 52 are from Sydney LHD.

The virus continued to spread through regional areas, with new infections identified in Dubbo and several surrounding towns, the Hunter New England LHD and Broken Hill.

The Premier said there was particular concern about the virus spreading in the Sydney suburbs of Merrylands, Guildford, Auburn, Greenacre, St Marys and Strathfield.

"We obviously remain concerned about western New South Wales, especially in our remote Indigenous communities and we just are calling out anybody who was in Wilcannia in the last little while needs to come forward and get tested," the Premier said.

NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said the data showed that each person infected was passing on the virus to more than one person.

"I can't express enough my level of concern at these rising numbers of cases," she said.

There are 462 people with COVID-19 in NSW hospitals, 77 of them are in intensive care with 25 of those on ventilators.

Dr Chant said those in hospital included patients in their teens up to those in their 80s.

"We know that for every one of those individuals in ICU, particularly those in the older age groups, they have a real and material risk of death.

"We will see more admissions and more deaths if these numbers continue to increase."

There were 94 cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period and 30 were in isolation for part of their infectious period.

Sixty-two cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 447 cases remains under investigation.

More to come.

Covid-19: New South Wales to hit 2200 cases a day
if virus continues to spread at current rate
Lucy Carroll and Lucy Cormack10:15, Aug 19 2021

Almost 4000 unlinked mystery cases are fuelling the spread of coronavirus in New South Wales with fears the state will hit daily case numbers of more than 2200 if the current reproductive rate is not reduced.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant on Wednesday issued their gravest warning of the pandemic, admitting the virus reproductive rate of 1.3 indicated that the worst was still to come.

The state on Wednesday reported its biggest daily surge in case numbers, with 633 new local cases and another three deaths. At least 92 cases were in the community during their infectious period, while health authorities are yet to link 3803 mystery cases to their source.

Leading epidemiologist James McCaw, who advises the federal government, said cases will likely continue to rise in the next two weeks with the possibility of numbers reaching into the thousands within the next month.
