A GST:

Farmer buys wheat seed, pays GST. Sells his harvest, buyer pays GST, buyer sells to bakery, bakery pays GST. Bakery sells bread to a deli or cafe, cafe pays GST, cafe sells sandwich to consumer, consumer pays GST.

Sales tax: buyer pays sales tax to cafe.

And as you say, sales tax generally is not on services, GST does. GST collects waaaaayyyyyyy more tax than a sales tax. GST is regressive, hitting the poor who have little discretionary income, it all gets spent just on food, rent, clothes.

You, Jovial Monk, have absolutely NO IDEA what the public paid in Sales Tax, before the GST. EVERYTHING became cheaper after the GST.

How about toothpaste being charged at 33% "luxury tax" along with furs and TVs? .... and gillette razors being at 20% whereas female hygiene products were charged at 30%. The GST has made many many items much, much cheaper. Check out new cars, jewellery, computers, TVs and food and anything you might use .....

I was just trying to indicate how a GST works compared to a sales tax, is all. But yes, you collect it, deduct GST paid on purchases and forward the difference to the Tax Office.
