Nasa must try to make Muslims 'feel good'

Post by Super Nova » Mon Jul 12, 2010 2:53 am

The head of the Nasa has said Barack Obama told him to make "reaching out to the Muslim world" one of the space agency's top priorities.

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/spac ... -good.html

"It is a matter of trying to reach out and get the best of all worlds, if you will, and there is much to be gained by drawing in the contributions that are possible from the Muslim [nations]."

Politics and science have always been linked but I feel this is getting silly. I have lived in muslim nations and don't think this will help one bit. If Alah wanted muslims to go to space he would have built Mohammod (may he rest in peace) a bloody space ship or have given him a vision of the role of women in space.

NASA should be about driving inovation and getting some of us off this rock as soon as possible. It should where possible leave the stupid extremes of religous politics alone. Not their business and should not be in their brief.

Cheers,
SN

Hi Sprint

I am not sure they are that useless.

During the europeon dark ages, they progressed learning in many areas, health, maths, science, astronomy... etc. Built on the greek and roman knowledge then passed it back to us when they invaded Spain.

Their problem is they never had a reformation and sorted our their religion vs state issues.

Mixing NASA up in all this is just not going to give any good outcomes.

On the contrary, I think it may do some good in a share-the-wealth kind of way. But not in a way that hinders NASA space priorities.

Here I've found another article on this from the Orlando Sentinel, February 2010,
NASA plans more outreach to Muslim countries

February, 16 2010 4:55 PM

NASA chief Charlie Bolden

WASHINGTON — NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden said Tuesday that President Barack Obama has asked him to “find ways to reach out to dominantly Muslim countries” as the White House pushes the space agency to become a tool of international diplomacy.

“In addition to the nations that most of you usually hear about when you think about the International Space Station, we now have expanded our efforts to reach out to non-traditional partners,” said Bolden, speaking to a lecture hall of young engineering students.

Specifically, he talked about connecting with countries that do not have an established space program and helping them conduct science missions. He mentioned new opportunities with Indonesia, including an educational program that examines global climate change.

“We really like Indonesia because the State Department, the Department of Education [and] other agencies in the U.S. are reaching out to Indonesia as the largest Muslim nation in the world. We would love to establish partners there,” Bolden said.

As a presidential candidate, Obama espoused a space program that invited more participation from the international community and Deputy NASA Administrator Lori Garver said recently that the next time NASA lands on the moon it would be part of an international exploration effort.

But this is not the place of NASA, and not the reason it exists. I disagree with the thinking of the president on it, NASA should stick to science, aeronautics and space, and stay out of politics.

Orlando, Florida, is a city near Cape Canaveral, by the way.

I agree completely.

The trouble is that in reality, NASA primary purpose in the beginning was policital. Beat the Russians to space and then the moon. They lost the former and won the latter. NASA has been a political instrument from day one. It does great science so without the political will to fund science there would not no big science projects. So I am afraid politics and science will always be linked.

We are so bloody afraid of Muslims that we cower to them now.

Here's an idea to help NASA achieve the goal of the president. The NASA logo should be changed to have a portrait of Mohammad on it showing NASA and Islam unity. Now that would create storm. NASA would get attacked. Science would have to rise to assist in sorting them out once and for all. It may lead to science proving Allah (god) does not exist. World religion would collapse. The world would be a better place. Science would become the one true faith.

Anyway, it does show that the president has no idea on how to address islam.
