Face masks required in Canberra in wake of Sydney Covid outbreak

The wearing of face masks became mandatory in the ACT at midnight, and the requirement will likely continue for the next two weeks.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said while the territory was yet to record a case of COVID-19 as a result of the latest Sydney outbreak, there were thousands in the city who had recently been in greater Sydney area.

He said there would be a 48-hour introductory period in which no fines would be issued but after that, he expected everyone to comply.

"There will be a 48-hour period where police and Access Canberra will be educating people; we won't be issuing on-the-spot fines or anything during that period," he said.

"But the past experience is that Canberrans have been overwhelmingly supportive of these measures so I don't think we're going to have a massive task on compliance.

"Generally it [non-compliance] happens when people are not aware of it coming into force so when you tell them to put a mask on, it's fine, so I think that generally will be the case."

Masks are required in indoor settings, outdoors and in situations where there are interactions with "people you don't normally live with, or work with".

"There are a number of indoor settings that a face mask will be required. However, the simple message is if you have any doubt about whether a mask is required or not, put one on," Mr Barr said on Sunday.

He said the masks were protection for people working in retail and hospitality and when in a "customer-facing role".

"Mask wearing remains just one of many measures that all Canberrans can use to reduce their risk of spreading or contracting the virus. Keeping your distance from people and good hand hygiene should be a part of our lives now," he said.

"We are also asking Canberrans to keep checking into venues [with the CBR app]. It's a really simple way to help with any contact tracing that may be required."

The rules do not apply to children under the age of 12.

Masks will also not be required at work if people are not directly interacting with members of the public.

Prisoners and staff at the Alexander Maconochie Centre are also not required to wear masks.

Well, there you have it...
Straight from a turds mouth....
The mask mandate in this circumstance is not a public health directive, it is due
to the Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations...
It is implemented so as employees cannot catch covid from a customer.
If the employee became seriously ill from covid and suffered serious monetary loss
due to contracting covid in the workplace, he would sue the employer.
This is just arse covering...
With a mandatory ruling for masks which dont work...
But hey...all they have to do is create an appearance of a safe
and proper work environment....and no-one can sue and imply
otherwise.....
And the public swallow it.... :rofl

Its coming...the rest of the world versus islam....or is it here already...

From what I understand - a mask is better than no mask.
An aerosol containing viruses - mucous fluid in a fine spray
is stopped from directly breathing out on to another person.
If it's just a 20 minute visit to a supermarket I don't mind it.
I wouldn't like to wear one all day in a job.
I reckon you'd need to change it every 2 to 3 hours as it would
get full of bacteria and fungus -
that would breed up from the moisture -
and you'd breathe it back in. Yuck.

We will have to agree to disagree....Im tired of arguing
about masks....

I'm all for masks if people want to voluntarily wear them. Otherwise, not so much.

I don't care what people do if it makes them feel safe, that's a good thing, but only so long as they don't burden me by trying to enforce their choices on me.

So......knowing that you might be an asymptomatic carrier, you'd go out and not wear a mask? And if is mandated....you'd break the Law?

My daughter just told me that everybody at Woollies was wearing a mask! Mandatory in Canberra, so they are taking notice. Also that the toilet roll shelves are thinning out. Again! :rofl :rofl

I did. The mask is a placebo. Try passing gas in front of a mask wearer. If they smell it, then the mask is useless. :rofl

After I recovered from covid, I absolutely refused to wear a mask other than when I was forced to to keep my job. Of course, I knew I had the antibodies. Businesses didn't want to confront me because they would lose money if I left. If they said anything to me, then I would immediately leave and shop elsewhere.

Redneck - You bring up a good point. Several states with concealed carry had to change their laws to allow mask wearing while carrying a gun.
