Cold Front Coming

Post by Black Orchid » Mon Jun 07, 2021 4:30 pm

Severe wintry weather will leave much of Australia's southeast shivering with damaging winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding, widespread snow, and hail forecast.

A strong cold front will impact southern Australia on Monday and Tuesday before creating a cut-off low-pressure system over New South Wales.

This will move slowly east and produce rain, storms, snow, and hail across Victoria, NSW, and southern Queensland, according to Weatherzone.

Snow forecast to fall in ACT

Parts of Canberra could get a dusting of snow as early as Tuesday night, as a cold front prepares to sweep across the capital.

Snowfall as low as 800 metres has been forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday in the ACT, with even the possibility of snow flurries in areas below that.

Snow is set to continue into Thursday for elevated areas of the ACT such as Mount Ginini and the Brindabellas.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Melody Strum said while small amounts were likely to fall in the suburbs, it was possible for several centimetres of snow to fall in mountain areas in the territory.

"Snow forecasts are quite tricky, but in some areas, we could see 20 millimetres of rain, which could lead to 20 centimetres of snow around places like Mount Ginini," she said.

"In areas around 800 metres, we could see a mix of snow and rain.

"Any areas above 800 metres, we should see snow staying on the ground, but for areas below that, it would be difficult for snow flurries to stick around [underfoot]."

The weather system that will past through the ACT is being driven by a cold front connecting with a low pressure system, which will bring Antarctic winds over much of south-eastern Australia.

Showers are expected to arrive on Tuesday afternoon or early evening, bringing with it the first chance of snow in the ACT this season.

Up to 30 millimetres of rain is expected to fall in Canberra on Wednesday, with winds of up to 30km/h, but temperatures will plummet, with a low of 0 degrees and a maximum of 8.

Up to her knees in snow. LOL It's been a long time since we could build a snowman on the front lawn in Canberra. When I first came here I used to drive to work when it was snowing with the windscreen wipers on! ..... it is not as cold when it snows .....

Polar blast expected to bring
largest snowfalls since 2015

Monday June 7, 2021 - 21:38 EST

The forecast of heavy snowfalls in parts of New South Wales could see some areas of the NSW Northern Tablelands receive dumps of up to 20 centimetres, the biggest falls for several years.
Locations on the NSW Northern Tablelands such as Armidale and Guyra are expected to be hit hardest on Wednesday and Thursday.
The forecast is similar further south on the Central Tablelands around Oberon and Lithgow, and heavier falls are expected in the alpine regions.

Thomas Hinterdorfer, chief forecaster at Higgins Storm Chasing, has planned a visit to Guyra this week and said he anticipates a snowfall similar to the 2015 event.

"It's probably been about five or six years since
we've seen an event like this on models," he said.
