One of Perth’s most affluent suburbs appears to be facing a real stinker of a problem, with a new sign placed at a Cottesloe beach warning visitors against “open defecation”.

The new toilet sign was spotted at the iconic South Cottesloe Beach and has left many in the golden triangle a little flushed.

Warning about the consequences of how defecating in public instead of using a toilet can end badly, the first picture shows a stick figure going to the bathroom in public, putting others at risk of disease spread.

The second picture shows how defecating in water can create environmental pollution, while a third picture warns about an increased risk of harassment for women when public toilets are not used.

The sign encourages beachgoers to use the toilet, sanitise their hands, and encourage others not to openly defecate.

The town of Cottesloe has been contacted for comment.
