It was more about States rights and the overreach of Federal control than it was about slavery. Especially for Americans in the 21st Century.

My grandmother was born in Florida.
She was always a staunch Southerner till the day she died.
She was an apologist for slavery -
they still had darkies living on their farm and doing farm work in 1910.
They weren't slaves but they weren't well paid either.
She said they were happy people - they didn't want to leave the farm.

My family farmed and so did my wife's. My father in law grew up in the 30s and picked cotton along with the hired help (blacks). He hid his racism pretty well until the alzheimer's set in. As racist as he was, he loved his mixed race great granddaughters, including my granddaughter.

Sometimes "racism" is actually a lack of trust for people not like you. Racism goes both ways and it contributes to not trusting strangers. I have black and brown friends that I trust with my family, but I stay out of South Dallas if I can. Being white just makes me a target to many and all strangers have to earn my trust.
