A shocking situation -
you'd think that in the 21st century they could make a power system
that would survive ice conditions.

Texas hasn't seen temperatures like this in over 100 years. I can see why they didn't plan for this, but it was their job. Heads will roll and rightly so. Most people I know took care or business with preparations or made out with what they had. I only lost power for a couple of hours and my water is fine, but I know people who went days without power and/or water. Not everybody did well, but the Texans I know take care of their friends. My parents have been helping their neighbors. Dad helps neighbors with home repairs and preparation. Mom checks in on the elderly neighbors and fixes meals. They even let neighbors park their cars under their carport to get them out of the ice.
We share groceries as needed. I've seen neighbors helping neighbors get their cars up the iced over hill at the neighborhood entrance. We check on each other, but my neighborhood hasn't needed much help. One neighbor posted a picture of the damage in a kitchen where the roof leaked and caused the ceiling to crash down into the kitchen. We showed up to help them, but it was a picture of my neighbors brother's kitchen elsewhere. It's not hard to find great people in Texas.

Texas weather: President Biden to declare major disaster
Published
US President Joe Biden is set to declare a major disaster for Texas, clearing the way for more federal funds to be spent on relief efforts.
Power is returning in the state and temperatures are set to rise but some 13 million people are still facing difficulties accessing clean water.
Mr Biden has said he will visit Texas as long as his presence is not a burden on relief efforts.
Nearly 60 deaths have been attributed to cold weather across the US.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki confirmed Mr Biden has asked his team to expedite Texas' request for a disaster declaration.
He has also been in touch with the mayors of some of Texas' biggest cities, such as Houston, Austin and Dallas, to ensure they have access to government resources, an administration official said.

Re: Texans Balls Are Frozen?
Biden is in his basement having another 'snow day' and some idiots are all outraged about Cruz being gone for one night.
https://nypost.com/2021/02/18/president ... ons-ready/On the campaign trail, Joe Biden repeatedly called for so many early a.m. “lids” that The Post ran a “Where’s Joe” front page, wondering when the “hidin’” Biden would come out.
We may need to run it again, because President Biden is still calling them: On Thursday, he postponed a trip to Michigan, where he was to tour a Pfizer vaccine-making plant, then called an 8 a.m. lid — notifying the press that he won’t be seen in public for the rest of the day.
Why? Because DC is getting snow. Seriously.
Notably, Vice President Kamala Harris still went ahead with her schedule.
To boot, the White House canceled the Michigan trip on Wednesday evening, before any of the one to four inches of expected snow dropped in Washington. Heck, it wasn’t even snowing in frigid Michigan.
This wasn’t even a first: Biden canceled a foreign policy speech at the State Department this month after DC got two inches of snow. Yes, the district government is infamous for its inability to plow — but a president can surely get his route taken care of.
Here’s the thing: Americans need to see and hear their president. Not as often as they saw the last guy, no, but at this rate, Biden will wind up the least-seen chief executive in decades.
Snow days are for children, not for the leader of the Free World.

I doubt we will ever see Biden in Texas unless it's for some kind of fund raiser. There are no "relief efforts" to be had. The damage was done and now we are going on with our lives. The power is back for 99% of those who lost it and the boil water notices are being lifted. Heads will roll in Texas for those responsible for this fiasco and we will get back to normal. I'm sure our wind generators will be upgraded for cold weather and our gas lines will be insulated from here on out.
I think Biden will be out the door in a few months because of his dementia. It looks pretty obvious to me. The longer they hide it, the worse it will look when they remove him.

There is an old English proverb that is most applicable here dating to the 1600s.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
But that is what Texas did, with approximately 90% of wholesale power derived from one company, ERCOT. If you had a minimum of three wholesalers, then, where one distributer fails, the other two could pick up the slack.
"But you will run your kunt mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."

ERCOT is just a utility regulatory commission. Their job is to make sure the grid is reliable and they failed. Their are dozens of companies that sell power. The grid is serviced and maintained by Encore and they are paid by the electric companies. Our problem is that ERCOT is a "good ole boy" network. The governor appoints them members of the Texas Utility Commission and the TUC appoints the ERCOT board. We need some accountability and assurances that board members actually know how the grid works. With the current political climate, I still like that Texas has it's own grid. It gives us leverage and some weight to our threats when bargaining with the feds. It also gives Texas room to avoid federal taxes and some entanglements by keeping production and consumption within the state borders.Nom De Plume wrote: ↑Sun Feb 28, 2021 5:40 pmThey aren't the only issues Tex...Texan wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 3:17 amI doubt we will ever see Biden in Texas unless it's for some kind of fund raiser. But Biden just ordered air strikes in Syria -
many people died -
he's getting the USA involved in more Middle East wars.
