Phillip Pullman on Free Speech

Post by AiA in Atlanta » Tue Jun 29, 2010 3:05 pm

"It was a shocking thing to say and I knew it was a shocking thing to say. But no one has the right to live without being shocked. No one has the right to spend their life without being offended. Nobody has to read this book. Nobody has to pick it up. Nobody has to open it. And if you open it and read it, you don't have to like it. And if you read it and you dislike it, you don't have to remain silent about it. You can write to me, you can complain about it, you can write to the publisher, you can write to the papers, you can write your own book. You can do all those things, but there your rights stop. No one has the right to stop me writing this book. No one has the right to stop it being published, or bought, or sold or read. That's all I have to say on that subject."

Frogen is one of the few people I have met at PA that really gets Pullman's point. Cynik, I think, was an advocate of free speech but that is about it.

IQ is a lightyear or ten from Phil Pullman. And this isn't the real world, just a small but nice board being wrecked to suit IQ's and your love of trolling.

I'm an advocate of free speech and free access to information AiA, but that does not mean to say that I advocate for that free speech and/or information be everywhere available, or that it be expressed in the most vulgar terms possible.

For me... what you quote there and what I claim here is the difference between a cheap cliché and real belief.

So Pullman think that freedom of speech has it's limitations. You apparently arn't allowed to express your desire for censorship.

I wonder what his thoughts are on having someone follow him around, calling him a fluffy bunny at every opportunity, to express their disagreement with his writing? Is stalking a legitimate form of free speech?
"But you will run your fluffy bunny mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."

Obviously hate speech is a different matter, but some people are so sensitive ...

And some people get a pathetic little kick out of trolling and destroying boards. Even more pathetic people get their jollies watching the trolling. Not wanting IQ and AiA to destroy this board has nothing to do with free speech.

You have all the freedom in the world here to say what you want, put words into people's mouths and outright lie, but when did I become your enemy? Has something happened recently to set you off?
