Swan laughing stock at G20

WAYNE Swan has been forced to explain why new Prime Minister Julia Gillard is not at the G20 summit in Toronto and what happened to Kevin Rudd.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, attending in Ms Gillard's place, told international political and business leaders today that the way Mr Rudd was dumped by his party was "very rare".

Addressing the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce, Mr Swan said: "It was not a decision that our parliamentary party took lightly. It was one that was very difficult and very painful for many in the parliamentary Labor Party."

The absence of Mr Rudd from the summit hosted by the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has caused puzzlement after he was credited with an influential role in making the G20 the pre-eminent economic forum for world leaders only last September at the Pittsburgh meeting.

We don't directly elect our Prime Minister. We're not a republic yet :P

We don't directly elect our Prime Minister.
If your Labor, you don't even keep him for a term.

It must be hell being a convictionless, poll driven party. I'm surprised Labor hasn't tried to nationalise Newspoll or Neilsen

The Labour Party decided the PM after being elected in 2007. Did you fill in a ballot for PM ? I must have missed it. Maybe it was the green one.
