The identity of the young man accused of breaking into an elderly woman’s home and sexually assaulting her has been revealed.

Craig Anthony Wheatman, 28, is accused of breaking into 92-year-old woman’s Concord home in Sydney’s inner west just before 4am on Saturday.

It’s alleged he then assaulted her before fleeing the scene. He’s also accused of stealing a wallet and cash from the house.

“It’s probably one of the most appalling (incidents) I’ve seen in 30 years of policing,” NSW Police Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Acting Commander Chris Goddard said on Monday.

“Some of the most heinous crimes in the Crimes Act have been committed against this poor, defensiveness vulnerable member of our community.”
