An international investigation has been launched into a disturbing incident at Doha airport which resulted in female Australian passengers being humiliated and searched - invasively.
Described as a horrific violation of their rights, it’s prompted the federal government to “formally register serious concerns” with Qatari authorities.
The incident occurred at Hamad International Airport in Doha after staff discovered a foetus, described as a premature baby, allegedly abandoned in the terminal bathroom.
Airline staff then took matters into their own hands.
Women at the airport, including 13 Australians, were removed from flights, detained and forced to undergo an inspection in an ambulance on the tarmac.
Qatari authorities forced the women to remove their underwear.
It’s alleged the 13 Australian women had their genitals invasively examined, without their consent.
None were told about the deceased newborn before the strip searches began.
7News has been told the incident has now become a serious government to government matter.
The department of foreign affairs and trade has formally complained to Qatari authorities.

Why anyone would travel anywhere near the Middle East is beyond me. I wouldn't even land there on a stop-over!

What is the correct pronunciation of “Qatar”? The most accurate English estimate is something halfway between “cutter” and “gutter.” It's not “KUH-tar,” the pronunciation that has become the standard among TV newscasters.
This is a long way of saying that Qatar, pronounced “cutter” is probably more in vogue now. It is replacing the older way, “kuh-TAR.” People who've had some interaction with the region might say, “gutter” a bit more – not inaccurate either. As many Qataris will tell you, the pronunciation can vary.

Probably depends on your "accent" too. Americans pronounce words differently to what Aussies do.

I've always pronounced it KuTAR, but my son has been there twice and he says the locals pronounce it as Cutter.

I pronounce it K'tar which makes it easier to say Qatari (K'tari) a native of Qatar. How the heck do you say that if you pronounce it as Cutter? Cutterie?

The mass strip search is a LITTLE much for my tastes. Mrs. Texan or myself will never be visiting the Middle East.
