A six-year-old boy’s death from a rare brain-eating amoeba sparked an urgent water warning in eight communities in the US state of Texas.

Josiah McIntyre died earlier this month, testing positive for Naegleria fowlers after playing at a public splash pad and a sprinkler at home in suburban Houston, officials and his family said.

Initial tests of the water supply came back negative — but another round of tests came back positive Friday from three locations, including a hydrant, the splash pad storage tank and a spigot at the boy’s home.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued an urgent advisory warning people not to use tap water for any reason except to flush toilets.

While working to disinfect the whole system, officials lifted the “do not use water” advisory — saying it would be safe if boiled, and listing a series of safety protocols for showering or swimming.

I don't like most tap water and gravitate toward bottled water. I keep 2 or 3 cases at the house. I'm OK with filtered tap water such as that coming out of the door of the refrigerator. Houston is 300 km from me and every city has a different water supply and water purification and treatment plants. My tap water is pretty decent, but you will never get me to drink from a public water fountain in the town of Ferris. It's nasty tasting. Mortdooley may need to heed the warning. This story is from his neck of the woods.

Some towns in West Texas are prone to drought and their water can be sketchy at times. Some towns are treating and purifying water from the sewage plants. Yuk!!!!!! I won't even shower in Big Spring, TX if it's just an overnight trip. I'll shower immediately before the trip and shower when I return home. If I were to move there, I would go full on rainwater catchment for sure.

East TX is covered with lakes and the water is not too far below the ground in most places.

Buy the Berkey if available, we use ours all the time even though we don't really worry about our water. It keeps the wife from using bottled water when not on the road.
