Federal Liberal MP Craig Kelly has slammed what he says was “insane bureaucratic overreach” during the search for an autistic teenager in Victoria and was “potentially a tragic mistake.”

William Wall, 14, was last seen leaving his home in the Yarra Ranges, east of Melbourne, on Tuesday after telling his family he would be going for his daily walk.

His body was found on Wednesday, just one kilometre from his home, and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Craig Kelly, whose 23-year-old son has severe autism and down syndrome says the restrictions on family and community members joining the search, due to COVID19, was “potentially a tragic mistake.”

“This was a terrible tragedy and shows there must be more thought that goes into adapting to the circumstances on the ground than following bureaucratic regulations to the letter,” Mr Kelly told 7NEWS.

During the search William’s older brother Harrison told 7NEWS: “We’ve been told by all the police saying that ‘you’re not allowed to help because it’s past the 5 km radius’ so just going to obviously put a bit more of a delay on finding him.”

His friend, Flynn Cousens, said “I’d rather go outside 5km and find him then stick to 5km and let him stay out another night.”

Craig Kelly believes the brother had the best chance of finding him alive, because, while the autistic teenager may have become frightened from search teams, he would have responded to his brother.

“The COVID lockdowns are demonstrating that too many of us have become mindless sheep, more concerned with ensuring that we are ticking bureaucratic boxes, and religiously ‘’following orders’’ that we’ve lost the ability to use common-sense,” he said.

Frustrated locals also arrived at the scene yesterday but were turned away claiming police cited coronavirus restrictions.

That's stupid and short sighted that they can't let family search for their missing loved one. The police should have hired him for a $1 contracting fee so that he would become essential personnel. There are always ways to skirt the letter of the law for the spirit of the law when it's for the right reasons.

Our biggest victims in Texas have been bar owners and employees. Bars have still not been allowed to open. Those that can't convert into restaurants are beginning to go bankrupt. Almost every other business has been able to open, even if it's at lower than 100% capacity. I think even the tattoo parlors are opening at a limited capacity. Texas was only shut down for about 6 weeks and that didn't include essential employees.

Some of the local brew houses that make their own specialty drinks converted over to making hand sanitizer, which was in short demand and proven to be a very shrewd move.
