Facebook’s threat to ban news from its platform in Australia to avoid paying for journalism has been labelled “ill-timed and misconceived” by the competition watchdog.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission took aim today, saying it hoped “all parties will engage in constructive discussions”.

“The draft media bargaining code aims to ensure Australian news businesses, including independent, community and regional media, can get a seat at the table for fair negotiations with Facebook and Google,” ACCC chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.

“Facebook already pays some media for news content. The code simply aims to bring fairness and transparency to Facebook and Google’s relationships with Australian news media businesses.”

Earlier, it emerged Facebook and Google could be forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties if they refuse to pay for news content they use in Australia.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Australia did not respond to “coercion or heavy-handed threats” after the multibillion-dollar social network today issued a threat to remove all news content from its platforms in Australia rather than share some of its revenue with local news outlets.

I don't have Facebook. Why splash all my private stuff to all and sundry? I email people I want to know what I am doing.

Yeah, I know all about that. I was having a dig at certain parties who left everything open for all to read - initially. There are better ways to keep in touch with friends and rellies, rather than bloody Facebook.

I went 9 years without FB. The only reason I got another account was to use FB messenger to video chat with my son in Korea. Other than family members, I don't ask for friends on FB. A few people from my past have popped in and requested friendship, but they all know that I may disappear again when my son comes back stateside.

I very rarely post anything there except for passing on local missing pet ads but I like to voyeur and see current pics of friends from decades past.

I don't think the teenagers even use Facebook much any more. They have other apps they use. Oldies use Facebook to catch up with friends and family - what is wrong with using the mobile phone to talk or text or typing up an email? I keep in touch with family and friends that way and they live all over Australia and around the World. Does anybody use Skype? I've never tried it but some people use that to keep in touch, face-to-face with people.

I use FB to occasionally catch up with people I don't talk to or text. Family I see in real time and close friends I also see in real time and/or talk to on the phone regularly and/or text.

If I had to talk/text to every peripheral friend from school or from decades ago I would never get off the phone so FB is good for that and has its uses because it's also good to keep in touch with people you don't chat to regularly.

I talk to and text friends and relies in other countries too but FB is good for the occasional few type written words.
