Horse racing tragedy

Post by Black Orchid » Sat Jul 25, 2020 2:07 pm

A promising horse has been euthanised and jockey Andrew Adkins taken to hospital after a sickening fall seemingly triggered by what’s been labelled a “flat out dangerous” move from champion rider Hugh Bowman.

Adkins was dislodged from Hot’N’Hazy and struck by rival horses in the incident on the home straight of the first race at Rosehill on Saturday. The horse, trained by Danny Williams and racing in only its second start after winning its first, was treated on the track but tragically had to be put down.

Pundits and fans took to Twitter to voice their shock at the tragic incident, with many calling for a long ban for Bowman — rider of champion mare Winx — who appeared to strongly shove Hot’N’Hazy before going on to win the race on favourite Smart Image.

An inquiry into the race has been postponed until stewards can speak to Adkins.

Greg Hall knocked over half the field when he won the Golden Skipper on Merlene.
He was suspended for two months and fined $50,000 which was the maximum.
Bowman will be charged for todays effort.
I will await the length of his suspension.
Adkins could probably sue.
Hope he recovers....his horse was put down...
I didn't bet in the race.
Todays interference was in a much smaller race field, with little or no pressure that
the Golden Slipper has.
Bowman's horse was just behind the leader.
He wasn't bottled up on the fence back in midfield.
As far as Winx goes....well, I could have won on her.....well...almost...... :rofl

Whoever rode Winx would have won!

I hope Bowman gets longer than 2 months. He's cocky and reckless now.

The video isn't available outside of Australia. I never realized how brutal horse racing could be.

I wouldn't say its brutal....
Its competitive....
Bowman made a reckless mistake...
He'll be punished...
The stewards will impose a pisspoor penalty because its Bowman and everyone will moan...
If they impose a severe penalty in an attempt to justify their existence, the penalty
will be reduced on appeal...

Stewards supposed to be interviewing Adkins (fallen jockey) today.
Rumour has it that Bowman will get about 12 weeks.....

I agree...
From what Ive heard and read, the general consensus is that if the "guilty" jockey had been an inexperienced apprentice, he would get maybe twelve months....
Bowman, being the poster boy in Sydney racing due to his links with Winx etc may get off
lightly.
Then there are the legalities in other jurisdictions if extreme negligence is implied in the charges....
There was a case some time ago where a jockey sued another jockey for a similar incident and the case was
thrown out as the Court decided that the danger of race riding had to be taken into consideration..
Dont know the full facts..
Driving motor vehicles is also dangerous but we sue each other for negligence....
Defence of "volenti non fit injuria" may have been a factor......
Probably why no-one sues for "sporting" injuries....
We'll have to wait and see what transpires....

They shouldn't be exempt from litigation for dangerous riding practices. That's just stupid.

If a horse is badly injured and has to be put down they need to pay the price. 2 years! The owners of the horse who had to be put down should be able to sue as well.

Bowman should have more respect for horses. Winx made him! He just sat there and enjoyed the ride.
