Crime Hit's Home

Post by Texan » Wed Jul 15, 2020 10:54 am

My parents still live in the house where I grew up in a suburb on the East side of Dallas. East Dallas crime has gradually crept into the neighborhood over the decades and my parents are in their mid to late 70s. Dad has remodeled the entire house since retirement and it is the nicest house for miles. It's very secure and my parents have a serious home camera system that the police often use to gather information after local crimes. They have a security system with panic buttons and a shatter proof glass door in front of the main front door. They know all of their neighbors and all of them are now retired, but the neighborhood is changing.

Earlier today, a group of thugs broke into the home of the next door neighbor of my parents. It is a rental house with a younger family. A 10 year old boy was the only person home. They didn't hurt him. They stole some tools and left. My parent's provided video footage of the perps walking down the alley behind the house and the license plate number of the car they drove to the police. Police suspect a neighbor kid from the house behind my parent's house who recently moved away. My parents have had run ins with him before.

Naturally, I worry about my parents. My Dad is still pretty capable, as he swung a hammer building homes until he was 66, but he is 77 now. My Mom just told me all of this. I texted my Dad and told him that my offer to teach him to shoot and even loan him a gun always stands. I think my Mom is too weak and slow to safely handle a gun in an emergency and Dad would be the logical choice as a protector, but I have no problem with teaching her as well. They both have the maturity and temperament to be responsible with a gun and they are both very mentally sharp. I guess my point is to always be vigilant and look after your elderly and defenseless. Times are changing and not for the better.

modern day AMERIKA texan how sad that post is and I am sorry to read your concerns

as you say its getting worse....not better...is there any chance of mum and dad moving to a safer spot presuming there is one...

at 77 one shouldnt need to have shooting lessons...what is your country coming too????..

why is it the good people like yourself do not band together to become a voice for reason and responsibility???...

all we hear now from your country is MISERY and finger pointing....all negative cant remember the last time we had any positive news from that part of the world...

how you live with all those locks and gun barrels I will never know....dont tell me it all makes you feel SAFE because I dont believe it...

at 77 living in fear or even semi fear is not good enough.....where are the good people texan.... dont tell me they have given up...and handed the streets over to likes of these thugs and vandals we read about????.... whilst you guys buy another lock for your windows and doors..

Sorry to hear that Tex.

I hear you.
Things here are not the same and once the economy takes a dip many people will be more desperate.
One of the reasons I have a 10 year old camry is to reduce the chances of it being stolen

It's also a time people are becoming more opportunistic and brazen. I hope your folks are ok Tex.

Any chance they could build a granny flat on your acres if things get worse in their area?

They don't want to move. I'd like to build a place for all of us. Maybe my brother can join us and we can build on adjoining land. I know my Dad doesn't want to move. That alone is a lot of work. It probably won't happen until he or Mom pass away.

Hi Texan,
looks like it's a problem all around the world.
Melbourne Australia has gangs which roam our streets.
We have:

home invasions,
car jackings,
muggings,
rapes,
murders,
drug dealing etc.

It is a problem everywhere now. Sydney has drive by shootings in the western suburbs regularly.

You wouldn't want to live way out West.

Times are getting worse. My 18 year old witnessed someone slashing someone's tire at a convenience store. I don't know if there was a personal motive, a racist motive, or just random vandalism. My son gave a statement to police.
